@simonthompsonco @ma_franks @YaleLJournal You keep repeating that, but structurally that doesn’t make sense.

For a private company to do this, they would need to ascend to government-like status (and somehow implement their own court system to be judiciary).

Highly recommend that you read both papers.

Our propensity is to conform to the movement of the larger group.

You'll often notice this behavior when a group of people suddenly switch to a different product, at the same time.

When Slack launched, many startups switched away from HipChat because "everyone was doing it."

👉 The bandwagon effect

Sometimes, when a product launches, there's an instant buzz: everyone's talking about it, trying it, or wanting to try it.

(Grew up in 80s? Remember Hypercolor t-shirts?)

It's the bandwagon effect that causes the sudden popularity:

👉 Basking in reflected glory

@RobertCialdini's 1976 study of university football found that after a win, fans were more likely to:

• use the pronoun "we" to describe the victory (when their team lost, fans used "they")
• wear team apparel

Fans "bask" in the glory of the win

👉 Selective perception

Human beings have pre-conceived beliefs that drive their decision-making.

One popular belief in North America: "if you're rich, you must be smart!"

People who desire to be rich respond favorably to messages from wealthy people.

@tnorthcutt A few thoughts:

Twitter rewards self-assured proclamations: strong views articulated bluntly often get a lots of RTs. Accounts that tweet this way can grow quickly.

On the flip side:

Even a properly researched, substantive, take requires some conviction about said topic.

@ianlandsman @EricDiviney @SeanMMasters That’s not the thrust of his essay Ian.

0ver and over he says: “we all failed.”

In a capitalist system, especially the way the USA has implemented it, *capitalists* have to step up to the plate (like they did in WW2) with funding, manufacturing, and building.

@EricDiviney @ianlandsman @SeanMMasters In the essay he doesn’t talk about funding vague “health and wellness” apps, he talks about our failure to manufacture coronavirus tests, test materials, cotton swabs, ventilators, surgical masks, eye shields.

He hasn’t funded anything like that (before or since).

@ianlandsman My point is: Marc could (for sure) be putting his money where is mouth is.

Sacca has a $350 million fund he’s deploying into carbon capture tech right now (and he’s lobbying the government at the same time).

Marc hasn’t really done anything since writing his essay.

Weather, geopolitical, and pandemic events can have a huge impact on demand and are definitely outside a founder's control.

COVID-19, for example, had a devastating effect on the restaurant market.

COVID also increased demand for a limited supply of houses.

The amount of customer demand for a given category is often cumulative.

In the video game industry, arcades came first, then home consoles, then PC gaming...

Customer demand from one era helps feed the demand for the next.

(The supply-side also evolves: more devs, etc.)
