<clerk motions to me>

“Sir, any questions about these power tools?”

<I motion to my wife>

“Talk to her. She wears the tool belt in this family.”

@ctwtn To me, hosting is decentralized in that we can all host our own stuff if we want.

(In this case, even hosting on AWS would be ok, because they’re not controlling distribution. They’re just the plumbing)

This is also true for crypto projects.

To attract an audience, everyone’s doing arbitrage on large, centralized platforms.

What’s the solution?

@SarahADowney But the guidelines of the First Amendment only limits the government from restricting free expression.

Those guidelines were never meant for the private sphere.

If you care about this the way you say you do, the answer is better legislation (not our individual interpretation).

@SarahADowney Again, what you’re advocating for here is just another way of moderating content.

It is no more “free speech” (as defined by US law).

For example, in the EU’s version of free speech, platforms would have less say on who gets banned (and the government would have more).

@SarahADowney So which cultural definition are you using?

(For which people, and which companies? Located where? Afghanistan? Russia? The EU?)

The legal definition of free speech in the US allows companies to moderate content, and ban users.

@SarahADowney So it sounds like you're saying "you agree with Elon Musk's opinions on free speech, and you're happy to see them enacted."

"Free speech" is largely a legally defined concept. Elon's ideology is outside of that.

@kylefox My sense is that you are not a nihilist.

I think many folks are in favor of "maximizing psychological and social health" (S. Harris).

We have the potential, as humans, to maximize the amount of good there is in the world.

That's why it's worth taking stuff seriously.

@dylanized Controlling one of the world’s largest social networks as a single individual (with no board or shareholders to report to) would certainly give Elon a lot of power.

@michaelkoper That’s definitely something I’d like to explore in the future (especially since so many billionaires now own media companies: the NYT, WP, Atlantic, etc)

In this case, I wanted to evaluate the purchase from the POV of Elon’s stated objective: to improve free speech.

@webby2001 Here's what I want from a car rental place:

1. Book online in ~5 minutes
2. Show up, get the keys, leave (5 minutes)

Subconsciously we believe that our connection with winners also makes us a winner.

This also explains why we brag when we meet someone famous.

As we tell the story, we're "basking" in their fame (even if it's just a reflection).

@dgkeyes @TransistorFM I still use both, but editing in Descript has a ton of advantages:

1. Easily share video clips (with captions) on social media
2. Edit the video, and easily export the audio

It makes the whole process of editing and sharing way more efficient.

@tnorthcutt Let me rephrase that:

Expertise, experience, and research can lead to more conviction about a topic.

For example: if you have your PhD in climate change, you'd certainly have conviction about the topic, and want to speak authoritatively about it.

The challenge is...

Actions recommended by @IPCC_CH:

🪨 Phase out coal
💨 Phase out methane by 1/3
💰 Increase investment in low carbon solutions by 6x
🏭 All sectors of economy must rapidly transition to clean energy, carbon capture, clean tech

@ianlandsman Lots of people are acting.

But what has Marc done?

He has tons of money and influence; what “it’s time to build” actions has he taken?

If the point of the essay was to encourage more people with power, resources, and influence to act… what has he done?

@ianlandsman In his essay, Marc says: “We need to demand more of our political leaders, of our CEOs, our entrepreneurs, our investors. We need to demand more of our culture, of our society. And we need to demand more from one another.”

It’s govt + business + investors + science + individuals

@JackEllis Honestly, I’d be happy if he just dedicated as much money towards fighting climate change as he does in crypto.

Andreessen penned an essay on how we need to invest in, and build, real-world solutions.

But his firm as invested a measly $4.5 million in climate tech.

Another factor that affects demand is competition.

If there are 4 restaurants in an area, customers split their $ among the available options.

With more options, customers might spread their spending (resulting in less $ for each place).

Some new products combine demand from multiple categories:

For example, the iPhone is a pocket computer + phone + camera + camcorder + mp3 player + calendar + notepad + game console + alarm clock + radio + flashlight.

Steve Jobs' 📱 launch rode an existing wave of demand. 🌊
