@nelsonjoyce I said “many” categories (not all).

The main idea is that often an innovative brand will “break trail” (do the hard/expensive work to establish a category), only to have a young, spry startup follow in their footsteps.

@ryanchenkie Yup. The horse has to be actively searching for water.

And, if they’re really thirsty, you don’t have to convince them to drink.

@egarbugli Do you have any good examples of tactics that work for increasing activation and retention?

@adii Yes!

Oddly, I think a lot of founders think they can’t “want” something for themselves when they start a company.

It’s OK to have personal motivations (more money, more time, more freedom) and to be clear about them.

Odd that these forum/reddit posts are all from 8-10 years ago, and Audio-Technica still hasn't fixed this (fairly common) issue?

@VineetSinha Great list!

I’d add: “make sure that group is sufficiently large.”

If the total size of the group is too small, it can be difficult to build a group of fans.

@ngoede Bubble Bobble was the first PC game I actually purchased (at Radio Shack!).

Everything else was on unmarked floppy disks. 😜

@louisnicholls_ @GeoffTRoberts @Julian @IndieHackers I never said it was easy!

But the market (the amount of customer demand for a given thing) is the necessary underlying factor.

Founder talent, network, team, etc matters, but only if there’s underlying demand (pull) for what they’re building.

@JamesNeophytou This story isn't about IBM, it's more about us as entrepreneurs: it's the fact that two people can start at the same time, with the same resources, and one can do 100x better than the other.

@nowendwell Definitely add social proof/testimonials to that page.

Your biggest hurdle will be convincing folks that they can trust you.

Knowing that other people use it (and being able to see their human faces) will help.

@oktuned I would put keywords in your headline that describe (explicitly) what your software is/does.

For example, your competitor put their top "search intent" keywords into their headline.

@ryanseanbadger Make sure you have a good listing on all of these "alternative to" sites.

When a customer has a good experience with you, ask them to leave you a review on these top sites.

@michaeldyrynda I would make your homepage headline explicit:
"Scheduled task monitoring for Laravel"

This should help with search results.

Also: keep focusing on SEO. You need to climb this page of results best you can (currently only your FAQ is ranking).

Replying to @volkandkaya
@volkandkaya A big part of the solution will be clarifying society's values around innovation:

1. Innovation can't just benefit elites
2. Innovators should be held accountable when they say something will benefit broader society (does it really?)
3. Disruptors can't break the law

As long as you’re sure the “number of people starting paid newsletters” is sufficiently high to give you the visitor —> trial —> conversion you need.

@logicalicy Yes. In business, forward momentum doesn't usually come from "getting more things done."

In business, progress looks like customers signing up, and paying you in sufficient numbers.
