@DmytroKrasun Weight loss is a tough industry (although there are lots of good solutions that people pursue based on their desire to look/feel better: the gym, fitness trainer, nutritionist, etc)

@NotechAna For fast food, definitely.

In software, our costs are much lower, and margins are higher.

@heyshounak It’s just incredibly difficult to convince people to want something (especially at scale).

@pavel_ivanovsky @TransistorFM It’s an observation based on 20+ years of selling to all sorts of businesses.

The boss makes decisions based on what he/she wants.

It’s based on what they desire: the change they wish to see, the progress they wish to make, etc.

@GregMolnar @IndieHackers @shl @elonmusk I think “pretty unhappy” is an overstatement.

I’m not convinced he’ll do a better job. (And I think his rhetoric is toxic and misleading)

But on a day to day basis, “Elon buying Twitter” doesn’t make me actively unhappy. 😄

@iamneuni @shl @IndieHackers You can question Elon’s actions objectively, regardless of your philosophical/political worldview.

- 400 employees at SpaceX signed an open letter stating they were concerned by his recent actions
- Tesla stock plunged after Elon announced his takeover of Twitter
- there’s more

“it was also accepted that free speech was not simply a legalistic limitation on government power, but was a cultural value”

Free speech, both legally and culturally, is not the same in every region around the world.

@thisiskp_ You’re always leveraging demand.

Waze was built on pre-existing demand for GPS.

Lots of folks wanted a GPS but couldn’t afford it, or found it too cumbersome.

Waze just unlocked pre-existing, pent up demand.

@sambreed This!!

I appreciate the candor here.

A lot of the other stuff is well-meaning, but I’m not sure if it really has the long-term influence that people think it does.

A lot of advice for teaching kids about money feels trite and unexamined.

Does an allowance provide kids with the right tools?

Does teaching them the “envelope method” translate into a long-term savings habit?

What’s actually going to make a difference when they are adults?

Katharine’s background:

She’s a climate scientist but she lives in Texas (the heart of the oil industry). She’s also an evangelical Christian.

She’s learned how to speak to all kinds of people about the climate crisis in terms that resonate.

@KHayhoe’s example is inspiring.

@brennandunn @louisnicholls_ @Shpigford I’m not talking about pre-destination. 😉

Again, the original thread is just about the statistics:

Many people try to build a business that gives them a FT income, most fail and don’t keep trying.

When anyone can put out a shingle, it makes sense that most biz will fail.

@hieu_ngvan @Shpigford There are other limitations as well: you might run out of money, have limited time, have other demands (kids), and not be able to afford the opportunity costs of trying to build a business.

@earthlingworks @TheOmarZenhom @Patticus I was earning more $ from my businesses (than my ft jobs) before Transistor.

This is best wave I’ve ridden though.

Jon and I are definitely good at riding this wave together. Neither of us could have done this alone.

Without market pull, we definitely wouldn’t be as successful

@earthlingworks @TheOmarZenhom @Patticus I mention growth and potential a bunch of times.

But statistically, most people who try to build a business that makes a FT income will fail.

Most won’t persist.

And, markets can’t have “unlimited” winners. Many will try and fail.

@earthlingworks @TheOmarZenhom @Patticus Of course, in most markets, there is always going to be a type of founder who is likely to fail no matter what. (“Wildly different levels of success”)

What we want to avoid is good founders choosing bad markets.

(Help founders who have "what it takes” to choose better markets)
