@just_a_jhonny It’s true (and it’s tough, I know!).

It does depend on how old the kids are (it was much much easier once my kids were 10+).

I should have also added “save up and then quit” to the list. 👍

@petersuhm @WarrenBuffett I think this fits with the framework I'm describing though.

It's another reason business isn't like baseball: you don't need to stay committed to a "swing" you've already taken.

Part of making better bets is being able to move on from a bad bet.

@MrSimonBennett It's going to be hard for you to rank for "AWS backup," "digital ocean backup" etc...

BUT, you might be able to rank on YouTube for those keywords!

"Hi everybody. Here's a simple way to backup your Digital Ocean droplets."

Idea #3

It really pays to own a topic on YouTube:

ie. If you have "software for plumbers" you should be a top result for that phrase on YouTube.

To build social proof (people are more likely to click on videos with lots of views), try running an ad campaign for that video.

@ChristineCarril I've been there! Such a hard realization.

But when a business is completely reliant on you for its fuel, it can't be sustained.

I don’t think a new, decentralized communications platform should be built on the blockchain, but the idea of peer-to-peer nodes is powerful.

It worked even back pre-internet when we had to sync FidoNet message boards.

@tnorthcutt I think we've seen how a "we'll see" approach can lead to adverse effects.

Putin is one example.

We've had more than enough info about his past behavior to make a judgment about what kind of danger he posed.

The "we'll see" approach led to a lack of concern and action (apathy)

Here's how ethical indie makers can respond to consumer psychology:

Commit yourself to care for people: listen to them, observe their struggles, and offer them something of value.

Helping people in a genuine way cuts through all cognitive biases.

Why do we buy Air Jordans?

Why do people buy books by billionaires?

👉 We want to buy from "winners."

"People are seemingly hard-wired to associate with and embrace success." – @JeffreyPfeffer

There are three cognitive biases at play here 🧵

@jamesvandyne Exactly. He knows how embarrassing that is.

The world’s on fire 🔥 and Andreessen and SoftBank just invested $150m into a “metaverse” company.

Maybe we should solve problems in the real world before we invest in virtual worlds?

@jesseleite85 I wish I’d gotten out of my hometown earlier to explore some other places.

I think small towns are great for raising a family, but when you’re young, optimizing for learning/connections makes going to bigger cities worthwhile.

@pgpreston @swaycopy With regards to pricing: pricing is incredibly nuanced.

In most SMB categories, pricing is going to be anchored to what the big competitors are doing.

Raising prices can make sense if you’re offering a lot more value than when you started; but it’s always relative to the market

Most new products are an evolution of older products and benefit from pre-existing demand.

Even Kodak's original camera, released in 1888, was built on previous iterations.

Since then, each subsequent innovation has benefitted from the growing demand in the camera category.

This fragility is especially evident in tech.

We in tech have heroes that are unassailable,
ideological fantasies that are unimpeachable,
and privilege that is left unexamined.

Members enjoyed the community more when they didn’t have to worry about paying for it every year.

This increased referrals.

@itsyogesh18 With something like payments, you'll need to build trust!

Your homepage should include a section for:

- Testimonials: who's using it, and what do they think?
- Ratings: what ratings have people left you on TrustPilot etc?
- Security information

I would create a gallery/list of folks who have used Red Goose to create their own apps.

And (again, anecdotally) the founders I know with healthy bootstrapped businesses are earning much more.

The difference here is that folks have likely come prepared to share something like this (“what project am I excited about?, what am I learning right now that’s firing me up?”)

Many contexts require more small talk.
