I can empathize with people's desire to avoid doom scrolling.

Constantly interacting with bad news can lead to poor mental health.

Getting into arguments on the internet often results in stress and frustration.

But we shouldn't avoid uncomfortable topics completely.

Do I know anyone at @Netlify @NetlifySupport that could help me out?

We have a few EU folks who can't access http://transistor.fm because it says our cert has expired. But Netlify says it's up-to-date.

Is it possible some Netlify edge nodes weren't updated with the new cert?

Clarifying my use of the word "distribution."

Here, distribution = promotion, discoverability, findability.

Websites, RSS feeds, podcasts, email lists, apps, art, creative projects, & music have always relied on centralized directories and search engines for customers/audience.

Interesting summary of “The Optimal Stopping Problem” by @andrewchen on @noahkagan’s podcast.

You can’t spend unlimited time solving every problem (buying a house, choosing a career, etc), so what’s the strategy for choosing the best option?

Kyle and I started the @productpeopletv podcast together in 2012.

Ever since then, we've been each other's cheerleaders.

Back then, we were starry-eyed hopeful startup founders.

It's incredibly gratifying to see both of us finding success in the SaaS game since then.

I used to believe that we should stop asking individuals to fix the climate crisis.

Now I see it clearly: we need to stop asking the world's *poor* to reduce emissions.

"The world’s wealthy need to cut 90%+ percent of their carbon emissions, to get to their carbon fair share."

@nbashaw I've read all the links in this thread, and I'm still confused.

Web3 "server" & "database" – are these actually better alternatives than what we have right now?

- isn't AWS way more affordable and performant?
- isn't there storage limitations that still make SQL better?

It's not east to truly understanding what category you're in, who the customers are, what's motivating them, and what they do about it.

You really need to be immersed in it to get it.

And then, *what you do* with that information (how you apply it to your startup) is key.

Video is an example of a content type that never really had an open protocol.

The result? Video is almost completely centralized on YouTube.

Open protocols (email, RSS) give individual creators a lot more leverage because they have a direct connection with subscribers.

Not all boundaries are good, and society is always evolving.

But having a common understanding of what's appropriate, and what's not, in a variety of contexts is helpful.

An acute example: "You can take off your pants in your house, but you shouldn't if you're on Zoom."

One question: how will Apple treat existing paid private podcasts, where subscribers manually add RSS feeds to the player?

@benthompson, @gruber, @SamHarrisOrg, and others use this strategy currently.

Will that go away? (Will they be forced to shared 30% of revenue with Apple?)

For @TransistorFM, we offer a 14-day free trial (CC upfront).

Then, we track:
- number of monthly trials
- trial to paid conversion %

Outcomes in business are largely dictated by the market you choose.

If you invest $1.2 million in a McDonald’s franchise, your possible annual profits are likely $100k-$250k.

Or, you could invest $100k in a software company, and earn $1+ million a year.

Some folks (@adii, @nathanbarry, @spencerfry) are motivated by building teams. If that's you, do it!

And, sometimes, there's a direct correlation between "more people, more profit." If the case for your product, hire!

But revenue doesn't always scale that way; so be careful.

The success of your product will be the culmination of all these factors:

- How strong was the "pull" from the market?
- What advantages did you have going in?
- Was your hypothesis? Did you execute on it? Were you right?
- Did you have the resources to build + promote it?

I'm mostly looking at this from the perspective of a small (1-5 person) company.

The minimum bar is much lower (and often easier/faster to reach) when you're an indie bootstrapper.

When you're small, the revenue needed to hit profitability might be $100k/year!
