@petrills The negative effects of overcapitalization on podcasting:

- power becomes more centralized in MegaCorps™
- small, indie companies are acquired, or have to shut down because of competitive pressure
- productions get funding in the near-term, but implode when bubble bursts

@AlbumEpitaph Most networks out there actually don’t give you more distribution (which is what you want).

In most cases you’re just signing away a big % of your revenue.

@theothercole I could be wrong about 3 (in some ways, I hope I am because I enjoy using Spaces, Clubhouse, etc).

But, I see a lot of folks motivated to spend time on these platforms because they're in lockdown and lonely.

I'm guessing it will end when folks can socialize IRL.

@dvassallo I'll just take one of those: education.

Won't that lead to some neighborhoods getting far worse schooling than others?

@brent_bellamy @sontek Lol. Nope, just telling my story!

I realize it’s not for everybody, but for me remote work = freedom and optionality.

Judging from the numbers of remote workers moving to the Okanagan, lots of people agree with me. 😉

@Podnews I’m still not convinced there’s enough demand for premium podcasts to necessitate a separate paid service.

It worked for Spotify because folks were already paying for music (the premium podcasts were a bonus).

@Kev_Conti It depends on which one you make your foundation.

If you make a solid idea the foundation and layer execution on top 👍

If you make execution your foundation and then try to add ideas on top... you'll just end up working hard on many mediocre ideas.

So what does this mean for SaaS founders, or creators selling digital products and subscriptions?

📈 Volume
💰 Profit.

Those are your two levers.

How badly do people want it? That's volume.
What's your price and costs? That's profit.

@chasewreeves I’m not saying big tech doesn’t need to be regulated.

But saying that tech CEOs are already “kings” isn’t quite right.

Dismantling Section 230 will not be good for small companies or free speech.

A company (like Transistor!) should have the right to kick off ppl who spout hate

But what happens if we get an authoritarian President who has different values in mind?

@smithtimmytim I’m worried.

If we get another demagogue as president, and they then also have control of the world’s most powerful social media platforms...

Making Twitter a “Government controlled utility” seems awfully close to “authoritarian state-controlled media.”

What kind of regulations are you proposing?

@volkandkaya #2 is about how much time, energy, and money it costs you to get a customer (variable costs).

#3 is mostly about your fixed costs (salaries, office, servers) and, most importantly, your profit.

@robertmclaws I entirely agree with you (I’m the guy who’s always saying “the pull of the market determines your rate of success”).

But… you can reduce costs, increase leads, improve conversion.

Maybe it sould b: “Make sure the numbers work."

@HarryStebbings This is not a normal thing for a VC to say. 😅

As a bootstrapper, I agree with you!

But as a VC: how are you going to get a return on your investment if there’s no acquisition? (Isn’t that how most investments work?)
