@m1guelpf Exactly, what was the "job to be done" with the egg photo?

Why were people motivated to like it?

People do things for one reason only: to make their lives better!

@earthlingworks An increasing portion of Gimlet's revenue is now coming from Hollywood deals like Homecoming. 📺

Plus: branded podcasts are still performing well (Gimlet Creative does that).

Also, there is still tons of growth in podcast advertising – that's still just getting started.

@robertgaal @pjrvs @joshu You're right, this screenshot is missing a bit of context.

The book isn't talking about innovation (which is a worthy goal).

It's aimed at folks who want to start a different type of (lifestyle) business.

For them, innovation and user growth isn't the objective. 👌

Next up: @pocketcasts

Search rating: poor

Results: Pocket Casts (like Overcast) only searches show titles.

@chrisachard @jonbuda We definitely touched on this in the episode!

In terms of "finding our first 100 customers" – building anticipation beforehand definitely helped.

I talk about that more here:

I don't think that "price signals quality" works like this.

You can only "charge more" if people desire what you have.

Yes, price is one signal of quality. But there are many factors that influence a customer's motivation to buy a product.

@louisnicholls_ Nope. If they're not selling haircuts at $25, why would they magically sell haircuts at $35?

There's a deeper problem there.

"Price elasticity" depends on a bunch of factors, and they're missing most of them. 😜

@erwblo It definitely helps if there's not too many other folks fishing for the same fish.

BUT... sometimes you find a fishing spot where not many folks are fishing yet. That's our aim with Transistor. 👍

I've thought about it, but I'd really like to be able to livesteam reliably from it, and I don't think that's possible without an external GPU. 😖 https://t.co/emmMIUTb2k

@tylertringas We use Discourse for @megamaker.

A few reasons for it:
- We host it ourselves, so we don't have to worry about it being shut down
- It's searchable and good for async, long-form discussion
- It has decent threading

@MihaiSterian @dhh To me it feels a lot like working out: a few focused hours a day translates into big gains after a year. 💪

So far, @transistorfm's been built on the side this way.

The difference is that in business, nothing is guaranteed. Efforts might not translate into a winning company.

@iChris Chris, every time I edit my own podcast I lose 5 years of my life.

@jonbuda and I need to get back on a schedule so that you're performing your audio magic on our show again.

@arlogilbert BTW - I'm not saying folks shouldn't "ship early" (or ship often).

I'm saying that success doesn't happen overnight.

It takes time for even the best ideas to evolve, find their place, and start growing.

@tcodinat Crazy! You're the second person to say this.

Anecdotally, I don't know anyone who uses Spotify.

And, I'm not seeing it represented in our stats either.

Weird!

So you're saying your friends all use Spotify to listen to podcasts?

@Time_is_ticking Sure.

However, in North America, if you have kids + a mortgage, you'll need at least $10k / month in most markets.

The bigger issue is reducing risk by:
- reducing other expenses
- saving more of the profit

@jonhainstock @statamic I really like it. I'd looked at Middleman a few times.

The big difference is that Middleman is a CLI-driven static site generator.

Statamic has a control panel, editor, interface (flate-file CMS).

@r00k @statamic A few things are motivating this:

1. @pjrvs + @studiofellow just switched to ServerPilot + DO and are really liking it.

2. I'm currently on WPengine and the overage charges (for over 100,000 visits) can get expensive!

2. Writing – it took years, but eventually, pieces like http://justinjackson.ca/words started resonating.

Again, showing up every week helps.

Write, and publish something, every week.

And remember to at least tell *someone* about it! (Twitter, Facebook, a Slack group, DM a friend)
