@awilkinson There’s a threshold here. 😉

There are a lot of areas where we don’t have 100% control, but we can make a 1% difference.

@jamis today my son (Jamis) searched for “famous people named Jamis” and now he is watching your YouTube channel.

@nphaskins @pippinsplugins Can you give me some examples of what that looks like in practice?

In our house:

Grade 12 - loves school, works really well with school structure

Grade 9 - ADHD. Doesn’t like school.

Grade 6 - loves school, easy to coach.

Grade 5 - difficulty reading, hates school.

@mastermaq Wow. Alberta (population: 4.4 million) has already tested more than 4,000 people, and the entire USA has likely not tested more than 11,000.

@derrickreimer I think it depends what role you play in your startup.

For me personally, I need some deep work time (for writing, coding), but find that most of my work is running around in short bursts.

@jonbuda, on the other hand, I think needs more deep work time.

@markjaquith Haha. Nice. I’m a bit ahead of you!

17, 14, 12, 10.

17 can drive a manual transmission pretty well now, and has applied to college. 👍

@johnnytong That’s a specific implementation, in response to a broader demonstrated demand.

The pieces were all there, and all contributed to the demand for the iPhone.

For example, I had a Palm Pilot (with a touchscreen!) years before Apple launched the iPhone.

@caffeinatedwes @jonnyburch Exactly. And supply (generally) follows demand.

AirBnB hosts respond to demand; they don't create it.

@KarlLHughes In my experience, and based on the data I’ve seen from other folks, you definitely need more than 100.

Also, if you sell courses, as most of the examples in the a16z article do, you’re going to need to sell another 100 copies to another 100 fans every year.

@noahwbragg @pjourneypod Yup, if you haven't paddled out to a good surf spot, you probably won't catch many waves (big or small).

That's the first step: putting yourself in the right position to see oncoming waves. 💯

@tylertringas @joshuaanderton I’m thinking of broad categories that folks search for:

“I need a VPN”
“Best help desk software”

There are folks making ancillary products in “help desk software” for example.

@petersuhm @arvidkahl And maybe not shittier! There are tons of factors that influence success:

- who you know, and who knows you
- how much money you have in the bank
- how well you execute on the product
- the marketing channels you’re able to execute on
- your history + experience
- positioning

@freyfogle @petersuhm @arvidkahl I think that what Arvid and I are trying to do is still valuable: tease apart the complexity of “how and why startups gain traction.”

There’s no guarantee of success, but there are principles that can guide entrepreneurs to better markets.

Better market = better chances

@logicregressor 😄 yup.

The point is to focus on the “main dish” as opposed to the ancillary dishes.

Every market has a “main thing” and then things that are ancillary to that main thing.

Unless the main market is huge, it’s hard to make a business from the ancillary market.

@ow Yeah, it’s pretty bleak.

For personal banking there’s Simplii and Tangerine, but they have no branches (if you need that).

For business banking... it’s just the worst.
