@CasJam Yup. Exactly.

Also, just because your positioning *perfectly fits* their niche, doesn’t guarantee they’ll buy from you.

They STILL might just go and get a Squarespace site! 😜

@dohertyjf @paidinsights More thinking around the positioning of a company.

Wondering if it’s better to start a company with “general” positioning (like Squarespace, or Webflow) and then attack the longtail with landing pages.

As opposed to structuring your whole company around a niche vertical.

@corey_gwin I'm familiar with that mad-lib. I think even that is too complex.

Our desires aren't always situational, and they don't always have an articulated outcome.

@joshahowarth Thanks for mentioning Transistor in your piece! I’ve had multiple people reach out today to say they saw it. 👌

@Mattylantz thanks matt. I love your walk-through-the-house videos. 😄

I need to run a conference/meetup here in BC so I can host all my favorite eastern Canadians. 👍

@oprearocks For me, I don’t know if that’s true.

I’ve been wanting to do something in radio since I was a kid.

I’ve been thinking about the podcasting space since 2008.

The cumulation of all those years ended up being @TransistorFM.

@JakeDohm I would talk to as many as I can find and ask: "What apps do you spend money on?"

They might respond:

1. Helpdesk & customer support (Kayako, Helpscout, Intercom)
2. Email marketing (Mailchimp, ConvertKit, Active Campaign)
3. Transactional email (Postmark, Mailgun, Sendgrid)

You want to avoid "quixotism:"

"The impractical pursuit of ideals, especially those ideals manifested by rash, lofty and romantic ideas or extravagantly chivalrous action."

Don't fall in love with a given form; stay focused on the function you want to perform.

Also, remember what happens when you’re on the receiving end of someone raising their prices.

When companies like Netflix (b2c) or Intercom (b2b) raise their prices, you probably don’t like it.

Certainly:

If you’re serving enterprise clients, you should charge more because you’re going to have to put up with a lot of bullshit.

If you’re charging $100 / hr, but everyone else in your industry is charging $200, you should charge more (especially if you’re as good).

@ogrover Exactly! Who does all this targeting *really* serve in the long run?

Podcasters connect with audiences of listeners, and build trust with them over time. Why would we endanger that trust?

@rsobers Yup, I agree that having a specific group to target in the beginning is helpful (especially for finding marketing channels).

The caveat is that (no matter how specialized you go) you need to find enough buyers.
