@kevinmgalang @aarondfrancis I’m glad that episode is leading to honest conversations. 👍

Having this kind of introspection and self-assessment in a relationship is important.

@mattwensing Real talk (from my experience): the more close family members you have, the more XP required. 😅

A healthy relationship with my spouse takes a healthy amount of XP. 😉

I also want to dedicate a healthy amount of XP to each of my kids (x4).

My 20 XP is going fast!

@jonrojas @iChris @TransistorFM Even with *really* good AIs, I find I still need to go back in and do a lot of editing.

I think automated editing, show notes, transcriptions, etc.. work fine for folks who wouldn't normally hire an editor.

But an editor brings a much higher level of polish to a show. 👍

Apparently, Bluesky's waitlist has over one million+ people on it. The team is slowly rolling out invites to 1,000 people per week.

I just updated my piece on this here:

@petersuhm Really appreciate this Pete.

I think your advice for the entrepreneur is spot on.

And (on the other side) I think governments should make starting a small business less stressful. 👍

@dr On the flip side, Twitter has (historically) been great at building connections with people, which can be enormously helpful.

Often, it’s “who you know” and “who knows you” and Twitter has been good at facilitating both.

@jangles @photomatt @tumblr It’s strange to me that you’re not on Mastodon!

In terms of values, it espouses a lot of the same beliefs about open source and federation that WordPress has.

Also, with WP now supporting ActivityPub seems like a no-brainer to be on the platform with the biggest user base?

@mrdanmiller @stacy_siz @TransistorFM @jonbuda @buildyoursaas Generally, our approach has been this:

1. Hire people we know from our online and real-life communities.
2. Hire folks first as part-time contractors.
3. We hire to make our lives better! Folks we enjoy working with, who produce cool ideas, solid work, etc
4. We hire slowly

Another way to think about customer demand:

Imagine people all over the world waking up.

How many of them are planning to buy your type of product today?

How many of them are in motion searching for a solution?

Founders/teams, think about:

- what product/customer insights do you have that others don’t?
- how well can you execute compared to your competition?
- what connections, resources, and skills do you have that give you a leg up?
- can you build a brand that stands out?

@dfgentile But, is it small startups that are best equipped to fill that void?

Or will that opportunity just go to bigger, established players (Bing, Wolfram, Zapier, Shopify, Expedia, etc)

@dfgentile If consumers are happy to use the ChatGPT UI (and so far, hundreds of millions are, making it the fastest-growing consumer tech ever), where will the opportunities for small startups be?

Any good interface that a small startup develops could easily be incorporated into ChatGPT.

Unlike past technological breakthroughs, it's been surprising to see how fast mature companies like Microsoft have been able to incorporate AI/ChatGPT features within their existing apps.

This reduces the demand for intermediary products, often developed by indie bootstrappers.

For decades, software startups built on the open web were more agile than their (larger) competition. They could move faster, leverage open source, and deploy new versions seamlessly to the web.

"When you've got thousands of customers, changing prices actually is a really big deal. [Backtracking a pricing change] is gonna be super painful. That's not true when you're new. So I would caveat 'raise your prices,' which I don't think I did in the talk." – @asmartbear

@CasJam Some folks are misunderstanding what I'm saying.

I'm not saying "these AIs can't be helpful assistants."

I am saying that founders trying to build "ChatGPT for X" or "X power by ChatGPT" as their main value prop are unlikely to succeed.

@arvidkahl The story with ad-supported, centralized platforms is always the same:

Facebook convinces local businesses to build FB Pages, abandon their email lists, websites, etc.

Then, a couple years later, FB says: "oh, now, to reach your audience, you've gotta pay for boosts."

"The right skills" is part of the package you'll need to earn more in your career, but there are many other variables:

- the employment market you're in (recession, etc)
- the geographic labor market you're in (EU vs USA)
- the size and type of company you work for

@aarondfrancis @RemindMe_OfThis I'm super curious about how much closer we'll be in 10 years.

Historically, we've disrupted the low-hanging fruit of human labor (the plow, the switchboard, manufacturing), but the "human dexterity" forms of labor (carpentry) are largely unchanged, even after hundreds of years.
