@zachthemack I think the recent layoffs, show cancellations, etc are a result of the overcapitalization we’ve seen over the last 5 years (driven largely by the influx of cash from Spotify, Sirius, etc.).

When there was lots of cash sloshing around, many podcast production companies expanded;…

@arithisandthat Right now, it’s terrible, because there are no RSS-based podcasts there.

When they *do* add RSS, folks who have a “YouTube podcast” and an RSS-based show will have multiple listings inside the app? 😫

This feels like a mess.

@KoenRijpstra @nathanbarry Even the most well-capitalized companies in the world (Apple, Amazon) have trouble manufacturing demand.

I’ve argued that all we can do is capture existing demand (existing customer desire); we can’t make people want something they don’t want.

At a frequency that produces scale:

"The software business is all about volume." – @ianlandsman

Customer acquisition & retention needs to be repeatable at a scale that supports your desired outcome.

You’ll need a steady flow of new + existing customers.

Identify a product that the market wants to buy:

It's not enough to find a category with potential (web analytics, campaign tracking, UI components), you have to build a product that customers are motivated to buy.

His experience is an N=1, but it’s interesting to me that for a show that’s never had trouble filling their inventory, they’re now having challenges.

@mattwensing I don't have a ton of experience with sales, but you can see how valuable this would be for sales teams.

I just love seeing products (and product design) that hit a big need.

@louispereira just heard about you through @arvidkahl.

I love your personal website! Clear & well written: it helped me understand who you are and what you're working on.

I'm trying AudioPen right now! 🙌

Super cool for them to notice how you've built the course for all sorts of learning styles. 👍

@r00k It feels like a dating app that involves only listening to "podcast episodes" from potential matches would be a better way to find potential romantic partners.

"Swipe left/right" feels way too surface (for me).

We need an app called "The Long Swipe." (Haha, well, maybe not)

@statamic This is great! I’d love a follow up post from the “camp organizer’s” perspective.

How was the event planned?
What did you learn?
What will you change?
What will you keep the same?
What should other retreat organizers know?

Do the best you can.

Listen to the people you’re making things for.

Solicit good advice and feedback.

Keep what works, and discard what doesn’t.

Don’t derive your meaning and purpose from how people react to what you make.

@asmartbear A few things that worked for Transistor:

1. Differentiating through our story/personality/POV
2. Differentiating through pricing/biz model
3. Differentiating through customer service
4. Differentiating by understanding customers better (and delivering high-leverage features)

We once got two kittens.

The kids LOVED them.

But:
- I was extremely allergenic
- They destroyed our furniture
- Their shots/vet bills were expensive
- We couldn't just take off on vacation
- The cat litter became a regular problem

For us, the cons outweighed the benefits.

I think what @aarondfrancis is describing is “maximum gated effort.”

True “maximum effort” on a business has no upper limit: there’s always more time, energy, and focus you can give.

For me, in practice, it was difficult to not be constantly thinking…

"Making it easier for a random person on the internet to leave a comment on my video, post, or episode" usually doesn't improve the discourse.

Having friction forces people to consider their words before posting/commenting.
