@digitaltrouble @noahwbragg Ben, remember when I was saying that thing about the EU slowing down small startups? 😬

You could register yourself as a USA C-Corp, and not have to deal with any of this. 😄

I'm not advocating that anybody go head-to-head with incumbents unless they truly have the ability to do so.

Beginner surfers shouldn't compete with Kelly Slater. But, if you're Italo Ferreira... go for it!

(@docsketch can go after Docusign because Ruben has serious SEO skills)

If customers already have multiple options (that they're happy with) it's most likely a low-demand opportunity.

This is why bootstrappers probably shouldn't build another to-do app, project management app, etc...

(unless you've truly noticed some untapped demand).

@mkhundmiri Too many counter examples for that to be the *main* thing that made their companies successful.

It’s the market! The market determines your trajectory.

@Swizec Hahaha. Exactly.

At some point (once you're 2-3 years in?) indie makers need to ask themselves: "Is this a hobby, or a business?"

You can do that, but you'll need to do it within the context of a market.

(In the same way that we're beholden to the law of gravity)

Sure, @taylorotwell could have built a framework on a different language, but it’s *what he’s done with it* that’s compelling.

The community & innovation is what keeps me coming back.

One thing that’s been fascinating for me (looking at US real estate) is how expensive the PNW is compared to other areas of the country.

Basically, if your state has mountains it’s 2-5x more expensive than other parts of the country.

I wish Stripe would just solve tax compliance issues on their end (the same way Paddle has).

Asking thousands of small businesses around the world to collect and remit taxes to foreign governments is 🤯 to me.

@louisnicholls_ @manuel_frigerio Hey is a bad example.

Basecamp can get away with long-form manifestos here at launch because of their big audience, and built-up goodwill.

They’re making a splash.

But once their personal reach runs out, they’ll likely return to traditional form.

We wouldn’t allow Chrome to take 30% of our SaaS revenue to be “on their platform.”

This isn’t like building a Shopify add-on. This is an independent app, that needs to be installed on a popular OS.

Also, I don’t think Main Street businesses are failing because they’re “bad at business.”

Most fragility in business has more to do with the market you’re in (and the factors that influence that market) than individual adeptness.

Skill matters, but the market matters more.

But in the context of this multi-year Spotify deal (reportedly $100 million), those previous revenue estimates for Rogan seem too high.

If he was already making $30 - 100 million a year, why would he sign a 2+ year deal for $100 million?

@shavin47 @jasonfried I’m saying there needs to be alignment between all three.

Without market demand, the triangle collapses.

“What you can provide” + “What you want” (without market demand) can be a good hobby, but not a business.

I know some b2c membership sites that have 23% monthly churn (but just grow like crazy).

@tylertringas Explain. Blogs and email are still platform agnostic.

Nobody owns the sending of email (MailChimp, Sendgrid, Postmark, Convertkit), email accounts (Gmail, Hey) or email clients (Spark, Newton, Canary).

Nobody owns the CMS (WordPress, Statamic), the hosting (WPengine), etc

@nbashaw In a closed ecosystem, the spoils almost always go to the reigning platform owner.

In an open ecosystem, the benefits are more evenly distributed.

As soon as a platform controls distribution, they can apply downward pressure on creators. They can pay them less.
