I'm not beholden to any of these platforms.

I believe that e-commerce platforms have a responsibility to make the checkout experience as seamless as possible.

The more friction you add to the process (more fields, validation errors) the worse it is for small businesses.

@ratiovernon @vivsavage We need to be thinking about *what kind of world* we want to rebuild when this is over.

The world I want to live in has incredible coffee shops, restaurants, and thriving independent businesses. A sense of community.

I’d be happy to see big corporate greed and destruction gone.

This is what mobile checkout currently looks like on @Square.

- Over 17 fields to fill out (most are required)
- Four different confirmation steps you have to step through

I know Square wants to support retailers during the crisis: this really needs to be streamlined.

@AndrewMedal @velosofernando Banks got $114B from Canadian governments in the 2008 recession.

The auto industry got $3.2B.

Air Canada got $1.2B in financial aid in 2009.

Government aid and spending is crucial during a disaster. I just want to make sure it’s allocated to the right folks.

Btw - this was recorded before the current coronavirus situation.

Kind of nice to listen to calmer, simpler times.

@louisnicholls_ The demand came from the market.

They saw the response they were getting to Steve Shoger’s tweets (market demand).

That demand lead them to create Refactoring UI, Tailwind CSS, etc

This wave has been developing for a while (Bootstrap, Bootstrapping Design, Semantic UI, etc).

@arvidkahl I like this line of thinking.

Ultimately, what we’re trying to quantify is demand:

“What is the economic potential for a product that I’d build in this category?”

So when I talk about “size” I’m referring specifically to demonstrable economic activity.

ie. 💎 market is $4B

The goal for the research and writing I do isn’t to produce “a perfect science for business success.”

Instead, I’m trying to identify a list of favorable conditions that might increase your chance for success.

@arvidkahl @nikstep @petersuhm I like “pull” a lot too.

However, it still matters how many people are “pulling” (meaning, the number of people actively looking for a solution has to be sufficiently large).

The demand can’t be too small.

@tylertringas @joshuaanderton Adding the niche/positioning vector here is interesting (and something I hadn’t initially related to this post).

The article is more around your category (value stack?) and what product sucks up most of the value in that category.

ConvertKit = ESP (main thing)

@pjrvs @typeoneerror @studiofellow 👋 Hey Ben!

Our conversation centered around galvanizing a movement with our peers; but focusing on everything that moves the needle:
- govt action
- Corp action
- social action
- individual action

- nicest travel experience?
- best snowboard adventure?

@iannuttall @tylertringas @anupom @dhomann @feedbackpanda There are a number of variables that determine the value of a market:

number of potential customers
x
how much they spend
x
the frequency at which they buy
= current value of the market

You have to be realistic about what % of the market you can get (and if that’s enough $).

We just have to be discerning when we apply other people’s experience to our own lives.

@cgenco One of the most helpful things my therapist tells me:

“You’re not the only one. I see this all the time.”

“What! No way; other humans experience this too?”

It helped me go from feeling like I was alone in my situation to: “ok. This happens. I gotta get through it.”

For example, does the “charge more” advice apply regardless of context?

If we’re in a recession should we charge more?

If the industry standard is to pay $1000, should we charge 2x more?

If you haven’t had a sale in 3 months, should you still charge more?

Also, when you say “charge more,” how much more are we talking about?

Is it “everyone should charge 2x more than they’re charging now?”

Given all the variables that go into pricing, why is the advice always charge *more*?
