@lukeburgis How does the USA’s Second Amendment relate to the situation in Ukraine: a country defending themselves from a Russian invasion with no other countries offering military aid?
@LeviNunnink@SHAWNHOSEA Yes. It’s largely overblown, and applies largely to psychology and sociology research:
“Part of the problem is that many reformers come from a narrow swathe of academia. The authors are predominantly from psychology, social and behavioural sciences.”
"False balance is a bias which gives unsupported or dubious positions an illusion of respectability. It creates a public perception that some issues are scientifically contentious, though in reality they may not be."
For folks saying "Rogan doesn't have that much influence over his listeners."
The entire rationale for podcast ads (read by hosts like Rogan) is that they have an unusual amount of influence on their listeners. They recommend products and people buy.
@SHAWNHOSEA It’s the plurality of sources and expertise that’s important.
The NYT’s take on event isn’t credible on its own. But if I read the BBC, CBC, WP, WSJ, Globe & Mail, and the National Post, I should be able to gather a sense of what’s happening,
@typeoneerror Do you think that it was to the extent that it is today?
I’ve had lots of friends who enjoyed South Park, but it didn’t influence their thinking in the same way I see Elon fans mimicking his talking points + philosophy.
- good science, that employs a process of rigorous review by experts (in discipline, cross-discipline) - good reporting from multiple institutions. If you read multiple sources (BBC, NYT, WP, WSJ, etc) you should get a good sense of reality

One definition of free thinker is: “a person who thinks freely or independently: one who forms opinions on the basis of reason independently of authority.”
If you’re forming your opinions independent of established expertise, that’s a problem.

In the past, provocateurs pushed the limits in media like South Park, Borat, stand up.
But back then, people didn’t get their news from South Park, or form opinions on important topics like vaccines from George Carlin.
They provoked thought, but weren’t our sole source of news.

“Provocateurs (like Joe Rogan and Elon Musk), are driving a polarizing new strain of political conversation. These personalities brand themselves "free thinkers" untethered to political dogma.”
“While Musk’s legion of fans will no doubt claim it’s “just a joke,” it’s still jarring to see the richest person on the planet compare world leaders in functioning democracies to Hitler.” – @paleofuture, @Gizmodo

This is fucked up.
A meme like this isn’t in good taste from anybody, much less a CEO with as much influence as Musk.
The tech culture needs to stop admiring him. He’s a 50-year-old man acting like a child.
