When you bring an idea into the world, and it's successful, it makes you feel indestructible.

But one of the biggest threats to an entrepreneur's judgment is when they "start believing their own mythology."

This section from "Profit First" definitely has me πŸ€”.

One way to visualize your expenses is to use @siftery.

Here, I can see I've spent $405 on Google Apps in the last 12 months.

But... I could have spent $60 (because I only needed 1 account!) 😭

Here's another one that's been hanging over my head.

I had an early Google Apps account.

Initially, it was free, so I created a bunch of accounts for different things.

But when I had to start paying... each of those account cost me $5 / month.

Canceling all but 1.

Alright. Just canceled this account.

I've had this Recurly account for a long time, but haven't really used it in the last three years. That $1,152 I spent on software I didn't need.

Feels good to get rid of it!

@marshal Yes! After reading the first few chapters, I'm hooked.

@MikeMichalowicz understands the way entrepreneurs can mythologize themselves (and how easy it is to hide from the truth).

Thankfully, there are some new models (like Tiny Seed Fund, @earnestcapital, and @indievc ).

These are new funding vehicles for entrepreneurs who just want to build a reasonably profitable business.

I'm a bootstrapper for many reasons, but it's not because I've had trouble pitching VCs. 😁

Simply: I've been a part of the VC-funded startup world, and I don't want to go back to that.

I've been getting great responses to today's newsletter all day.

Thank you. πŸ™Œ

This person's reply was awesome but he made one assumption I wanted to correct here.

@ninan99 Yup! I agree. I'm definitely working on getting revenue back up past $200k.

But... it's also a good time to reduce those expenses. πŸ‘

Writing tomorrow's newsletter.

I think we're making some big ideological mistakes in startup land.

πŸ€” should be an interesting discussion!

What are you using for auto-scaling?

(ie. scale up automatically when your app's workload increases)

@ericlbarnes @tnorthcutt @0x13a It's never that easy.

For example, I have a multisite that has tons of user permissions and states in the DB. Need to make sure all of that transfers over.

I want a UI that just handles it for me.

I've used Delicious Brains in the past, but I wish it hooked directly into Forge
