Currently, neither of us are earning an equivalent salary to what we left behind, but the company is making enough to pay our personal bills. ๐Ÿ‘

"How long did it take you to get your business to sustain yourself and you could switch doing it fulltime?"

Everyone's journey is different, but this is how it looked for Jon and me with @TransistorFM:

Pairing solves many of my work-related struggles:

โœ… Feeling blocked
โœ… Feeling unfocused
โœ… Feeling unmotivated
โœ… Having too many unknowns

Sitting down with someone (or using @PairWithTuple) can shrink weeks of struggle down to making a ton of progress in an hour. ๐Ÿ˜‰

@JoshuaPDawson I worked for a Project Management software startup.

It's a really difficult market for a number of reasons:

1. Decisions are made by committee
2. Each stakeholder wants something different (engineers just want the tool out of the way, project managers want to see everything)

@venkinesis Folks were already in motion when Basecamp came around: they were using other software like Microsoft Project.

Basecamp didnโ€™t create the product category.

Listening to @JordanGal & @CasJam talk about "paid private podcasts" on the Bootstrapped Web podcast.

I just made a video of how this works. Tested a different service (called @glowdotfm) out.

Funded startups are different! They're trying to create new paradigms.

They're raising lots of money because they're trying to do something profoundly difficult: change the way people think, feel, and act.

Bootstrapped startups don't have enough money or time to do that work.

The goal with bootstrapping is not to change the way people behave!

Instead, we're trying to recognize where people are already in motion and build solutions for the direction they're headed.

We don't create the waves; we ride them.

VC-backed startups are trying to create wholesale changes in human behavior. They're not selling "software," they're selling "organizational change."

Bootstrapped startups are different. Founders have to identify a need that customers already know they have.

Interesting to read @stewart's 2014 essay ("We Don't Sell Saddles Here") in 2019.

It's a good illustration of the difference between VC-backed and Bootstrapped startups. ๐Ÿ‘‰

@ideasasylum @tylertringas Yup. Totally agree.

I'm completely in favor of mindful products that:
- let you rest
- aren't addictive
- decrease anxiety
- don't disturb the peace
- allow you to be present
- improve human relationships
- improve mental & physical health
- turn off when you've had too much

@kirkbyers @tylertringas Yes, "usage" here is a rough rubric for "getting ongoing value."

Think about when the boss is evaluating expenses. What do they say?

"Hey Janet, are we still using Pager Duty or can I cancel it?"

@mnlfrgr It definitely depends on the market, the type of product youโ€™re selling, and the outcome youโ€™re looking for.

Iโ€™ve run $100/month+ SaaS businesses as well; we still needed a healthy number of prospects showing up each day.

@tylertringas Iโ€™m using coffee as an example of good demand and usage on the consumer side.

(Not talking about the supply side; which is also important, but Iโ€™ll discuss later)

โ€œCoffee is Canadaโ€™s most consumed beverage amongst adults โ€“ even more than tap water.โ€
