@mikecodemonkey This hasn’t been my experience at all.

Once Transistor was making good money, I immediately transitioned into long-term thinking, planning, doing:

- more community involvement
- more giving to causes
- more saving and investing
- more reading and writing about non-biz stuff

Relief from present-day scarcity gives you the space to have future-based dreams.

@jasonfried Yup. And it’s in those “esteem” and “self-actualization” phases that we’re able to finally think outside of ourselves, look outwards, and think long-term about our communities.

Desperation creates a scenario where everyone is scrambling to meet their own needs.

I’m lucky: one of the big reasons I survived my depression was my access to public health care.

Early on, I went and saw my family doctor and she helped me work out a plan for getting better.

(I also paid for a therapist, which was massively helpful).

I would wake up and spend the whole day thrashing, trying to make money so I could survive.

I didn’t think about the future; I was consumed by my need to survive.

As soon as I started making more money, my desperation subsided.

I started dreaming about the future again.

A few years ago, I was really depressed. I’d never been depressed before (I’d previously thought depression was something “weak people” experience).

My depression was debilitating. It resulted in me making way less money which, in turn, made me way more desperate.

@antdke I was initially really excited about UBI. I think it still has potential (I wish we had more real-world tests of it in practice).

Maybe part of my problem with it is it’s framing? What if we, as citizens, had more ownership over all the profits being generated by automation?

Someone asked me “how can we promote long-term thinking in our society?”

Initially I was stumped, but now I think I have a good answer:

“Provide for people’s basic needs first.”

When folks are worried about their health and livelihood, it consumes their day-to-day thoughts.

It’s unfortunate that @pmarca hasn’t (historically) lead by example, at least not in a way that matches this rhetoric.

Hopefully, @a16z will start investing in the real-world projects that Marc talks about in this piece.

What’s the best “zoom concert” or “selfie cam jam” you’ve seen so far?

For me, it’s been the @barenakedladies.

I wasn’t a huge fan before, but I’m really digging them!

Feels like they understand the medium, and how to perform on the smaller screen. 👍

I like that @pmarca is challenging both governments and businesses to build.

We can’t solve our problems solely relying on businesses, or solely relying on government.

We need both to invest massively in R&D and capital projects – no more tax cuts or share buybacks!

@jhooks This isn’t about being “anti-Amazon” as much as it is about “co-operating and collaborating.” It’s about the underlying structures.

We’ve already seen success with this here in Vernon: we’ve helped (free of charge) restaurants, cafes, and a skateboard shop get online + survive.

When I quit working in the non-profit sector (at 28) I was desperate for a new job.

I applied at an Apple Store just to have *something* and didn’t get the job.

And then, @greggoldring’s hand appeared through the fog and pulled me up. He gave me a job.

That changed my life. ❤️

@nbashaw Often, when we get that feeling of unlocking “great execution” what we’ve actually unlocked is a “pent-up pocket of demand.”

I’m not saying that quality doesn’t matter! The quality of a thing can be a facet of demand. (“I want a better quality pen.”)
