First, my audience isn't one-dimensional.

We all live in a social, economic, and political context. We have feelings, families, histories.

"Business" exists within these contexts. If my ideas about business are divorced from their human context, how helpful are they really?

A few times a year, someone will send me a message like this:

"Stick to talking about bootstrapping and business. Don't talk about [philosophy, mental health, economics, politics, ecology]."

Wasn't sure if I was going to publish this one, but folks on my newsletter said I should:

"To get ahead, you need to make smart decisions, but anxiety puts you in a fog. So you fall down a lot, which makes you more desperate."

Many folks talk about pricing as a leveraging factor.

But it's often too simplistic:

"If I charge $5/mo I only make $60/yr. But if I charge $500/mo I'll make $6,000!"

What's missing from the picture:
- ease of acquisition
- purchase frequency
- retention
- overall resilience

"Never compete on price."

We're always competing on price to some extent. It's always a factor in the customer's purchasing decision (and in their decision to keep paying).

A better axiom: "Don't make price the only factor you compete on." That makes sense. 👍

@DKThomp When you have a breadline, you should design it so the people who need bread the most are at the front.

Why not say: “small biz with less than $1 million in annual revenue come first?”

I decided to try it out! Here's a quick video.

@jhooks This! I’ve been reading Christopher Alexander’s work (originally published in 1979) and it’s incredible.

The principles and patterns he describes really are timeless.

@ajlkn @vanschneider @csallen @Noahpinion I used to think this way, but unfettered “making” without any critique isn’t responsible.

For example, historically, the best writers had a trusted group who would challenge their thinking and critique their work. (The Inklings, for example)

This is my post on 2014.

It over-emphasizes “rugged individualism” but it describes the research on the cognitive affects of “money stress” in more detail:

@KajanSiva @antdke Yes. Currently the underlying structure primarily benefits a small number of elites. We need to change this.
