@madebyroom BTW – we have one of these Room booths in our coworking place. I’m a big fan.

Despite all the “haha you made open offices and now you’re buying tiny cubicles” memes, I actually think open office + these types of booths are a good solution.

Discovered (and used!) ExifTool for the first time today.👍

Really helpful, especially when you suspect someone's renamed a file's extension (thinking it would magically change the file's format) 😜

@tylertringas I agree: we need policy changes.

But not doing anything personally is abdicating responsibility.

It’s defeatism: “well, if the USA and China won’t do anything about it we’re fucked anyway!”

@Shopify and @stripe are both leading decarbonizing campaigns. We can lead here too.

For listening to music at work, I still haven't found anything better than Soundcloud.

I've tried Apple Music and Spotify playlists, but nothing gives me great remixes and "related tracks" like Soundcloud.

Currently on rotation:

When folks yell out “charge more!” on the internet, I want to know:

“Charge more” compared to what?

Is it:
- Charge more compared to other people in your industry?
- Charge more compared to what you charged last year?
- Charge more than other people in your state?

There are some folks saying that businesses don't need to grow, that they can get to "enough" and just coast.

But, I can't see how that works practically.

But on a macro-scale, our economic system relies on perpetually increasing:

- resource extraction
- population growth
- energy usage

(Not sustainable)

Also, running those big businesses seems like a world of pain compared to this nice small business that Jon and I are building. 😉

All of us are prone to this behavior on some level.

Our emotional health goes up and down.

And when we're feeling down, we can think, do, and say things that aren't kind.

a) new users who are buying it for the first time
b) existing users who are switching for various reasons

Listening to @JordanGal & @CasJam talk about "paid private podcasts" on the Bootstrapped Web podcast.

I just made a video of how this works. Tested a different service (called @glowdotfm) out.

I've experienced this dichotomy personally.

In the past, I've run businesses where I was pushing really hard to get sales. It always felt like a grind, like pushing a rock up a hill.

In retrospect, I was trying to sell ice cream in the winter.

Now, think about what it'd be like selling ice cream on the beach during the winter.

If you worked really hard, and did a bunch of advertising, maybe you'd get a few sales, but not many.

It's hard to push a product that the market doesn't want!

Part of the problem with my WP site is the page builder + plugins.

But it still feels like it's harder to get WP to go fast. WP has lots of cruft built in.

For example, for JS WP still relies on:
- React (Gutenberg)
- Backbone.js (Media Manager)
- jQuery (legacy code)

There are examples of anglers who set out to catch Blue Marlin (a rare fish found in tropical waters).

They grind and grind and grind. A few lucky ones will hook one.

It’s the same with businesses. If you choose a small, difficult target market, your chances of success go down

@DeLongShot just hopped on a call and helped me get this old Rails project up and running again.

Thanks Adam! 🙌

Before we launched, a lot of what we thought would be true ended up not being true.

A lot of it was aspirational truisms we'd gleaned from the bootstrapping community.

But you don't really know until you launch what kind of customers you're going to have.

I'm not opposed to charging more.

Generally I like @ianlandsman's approach:

"If *no one* is complaining, you should probably raise your price."

But don't alienate the thousands who are happily paying you (and might keep paying for another 5 years)!

One of the big risks for a small product is stuffing it with more "value" just so you can increase the price.

Often, users get features they don't want *and* they have to pay more for it.

It's for folks who want to learn Redux. In the process, you'll build a complete React app. 👌

Incredible to see how resilient certain podcasts are in @ApplePodcasts rankings.

For example, Seth Godin's Startup School still ranks, even though it was last published in 2013!

My guess is it's a combination of:
- the right keyword(s)
- initial traction begetting more traction

@KevinRaetz @JamesIvings It's mostly about the order of things.

Yes, you need to tell people about your product. But that comes second.

First, you have to build on a solid foundation.

@tylertringas I'd say @podia is a good replacement for Patreon. They do monthly subscriptions in a similar fashion.

They're missing two things:
- "support us on Patreon" is a thing that people know and understand
- there are some network effects when you support someone on Patreon
