@taylorotwell I loved this whole episode btw.

You had some spicy takes, but you were also clear that if you dug in your heels (and didn't explore the rest of the ecosystem) that Laravel could get left behind.

I think you're 💯 right about the "disconnect" between the two sides.

Write it out 📝🔥

I built this little site called http://writeanddestroy.com

It allows you to vent your thoughts (things that are bothering you, things that hurt you).

Then you click the "shred" button and watch your words get destroyed.

Snowboarding is one of the few activities that gets me out of my head, and actually clears my mind.

When I'm riding, all I can think about is what's in front of me.

That being said, having thoughtful discourse on Twitter or Facebook is incredibly challenging.

In my experience, it's been more helpful to bring the discussion to a podcast, live audio event, email newsletter, or DMs.

@JackEllis @ParikPatelCFA @elonmusk 🙄 the rich don’t pay their fair share.

Elon paying some tax, for the first time in years, whilst exercising his stock options, does not invalidate the idea that “the rich don’t pay their fair share.”

He’s literally paying these taxes so he can buy more stock and get richer.

Up until now, Elon Musk has largely avoided paying personal taxes because he takes out hundreds of millions in loans (using his TSLA stock as collateral) to pay for his lifestyle.

Loans are exempt from income tax.

Again, I'm not saying we can *never* fly.

I'm just suggesting that instead of flying 6x per year, we could fly 1-2x per year.

(It's similar to reducing your alcohol consumption. An occasional drink is OK, but drinking every day is probably a problem).

Before we commit to a wholesale, worldwide shift to our economic system, we should ensure we're not committing ourselves untenable energy demands (climate-wise).

Using greener energy sources for crypto also suffers from the "induced demand" problem.

A practical example: I used to pay for business lunches / coffee meetings all the time with my business visa.

But... I realized these small transactions end up costing me way more in accounting costs (uploading the receipt, categorizing, reconciling).

I minimize those now.

We've tried this pricing experiment:

A contract has to be $10k/year for us to go through an actual enterprise sales process (answering security questionnaires, etc).

In the last 24 months we've offered it to dozens of leads. Only 1 wanted to move forward. Still no contract.

In a company, the boss generally curates who you work with and sets the tone for the work environment.

In our coworking place, members curate who joins, and we all set the tone.

Even compared to the best companies I’ve worked at, coworking feels decidedly more “free.”

Nearly every other platform makes it easy for podcasters to submit their show (with one click) via an API: Spotify, Google, @PodcastAddict, @Breaker, @ListenNotes, @PlayerFM.

Lots of friction on Apple.

It makes sense to be strategic about the industry, market, or product category you choose, because that decision will determine the floor and ceiling of your possible upside.

As a founder, you'll need some "unfair advantages" in your market.

If you've been building up skills, reputation, and connections in a category, you have a competitive advantage.

(In the same way that Tony Hawk has a built-in advantage in the skateboard industry)

@mjwhansen That’s been the biggest thing.

My biggest mistake was believing (in my 20s) that I was “right” ideologically, and then holding on to that many years. It gave me self-esteem but at the expense of personal growth.

It caused a lot of emotional, social, relational problems.

My guess is power users are regularly spending 8+ hours a day on Clubhouse.

In investor-speak, Clubhouse’s “user engagement” is off the charts. It’s habit-driven by design.

Investors love engagement, because they can then monetize users’ time and attention.

Every growing platform provides opportunities for participants (while the window is open).

Attributes of the Clubhouse format that could make it difficult to sustain long-term:

- the quality of a room depends on its participants and who gets to speak (difficult to maintain)
- the best live streamers have to commit long hours every day to get engagement (many burn out)

We should be paying more attention to "brand-based pricing."

In most cases, it's your brand that allows you to charge more.

A good brand can change the perceived value of a product.
