How does our AWS hosting impact our carbon footprint?

Let’s Encrypt?

All the sending and receiving bandwidth we use?

@patrickbjohnson @nbashaw Yes, that's a big part of it.

But, in some markets what should be the "main thing" (the CMS) actually ends up being subverted by something else (hosting). People might not pay for the CMS (WordPress) but will pay for the hosting.

@einarvollset No, I think you’re misunderstanding me.

Every category has a “main thing,” as well as tangential “add-ons.”

The challenge with add-ons: not everyone wants them. For example: “commenting platform for podcasts.”

But, every podcast needs hosting (the main thing).

@jackyalcine 😂

I suppose this metaphor breaks down eventually.

The point is to focus on the “main dish” as opposed to the ancillary dishes.

@avclark In my experience, dynamic ads eventually lead to this, because the tech is designed to treat ads like “inventory.”

The creative element isn’t considered.

The dynamic ads aren’t smart enough to consider the context surrounding the ad spot.

@mnlfrgr I’d love to see some studies on this.

My gut instinct is that most coffee shop owners search “email marketing” or “email newsletter” see MailChimp, ActiveCampaign, Campaigner, and just sign up for that.

The top 3 links (or ads) get most of the traffic (and most of the sales)

Most of their revenue is from affiliates I believe.

@dohertyjf @paidinsights Results may vary by industry and product category, but I’m still unsure if this trend fits most “niche” keywords.

I know the SEO industry loves the long tail, but…. I’m still skeptical. 😜

I’d have to see the data.

@billyevans Does this really happen in practice?

(I could be wrong)

What I see in practice:
1. Searches for “email mairketing”
2. Clicks on top 1-3 results
3. Makes a decision based on those

My guess is it’s low.

@jaredkessler @pjrvs @studiofellow Yup, that’s part of the solution.

But climate change is an “all hands on deck” situation.

We need every individual, corporation, govt to be taking action.

Often, government/corp policy follows a massive grassroots movement.
