@mattwensing @einarvollset In your example, “trucking” is the main thing, and has remained the main thing for decades.

It’s the ancillary products/services in the category that come and go.

@mattwensing @einarvollset “Main things” seem to stay longer.

Since the advent of the web, folks have needed web hosting (Carrd, Bluehost, Squarespace, Geocities) and that continues to be true (“the main thing”).

For a while, you had to have a LinkExchange banner, guestbook, and hit counter (ancillary).

@ibogost Enjoyed this one.

Although, I feel like folks in my community are drifting back to cafes, pubs, and other public spaces outside the home.

@JFaid But the environmental cost savings are clear.

Plus: trains are just fun.

I think we need to be investing in more fun.

@Aazarshad Yes, CRM is a good example of a category where I have seen this type of specialization work.

Mostly because some sectors have really specific deal flow:

“CRM for real estate agents”

@kpavlovsky_pro Yes. But I’m wondering if the overall volume is there for most product categories (aside, maybe, from the big ones like “web hosting”).

Even in web hosting, the “general purpose” builders (like Squarespace, Webflow, etc) all started small, but targeted many niches.

@paidinsights @dohertyjf Are you sure they're benefitting primarily from those longtail keywords?

Or... is Squarespace vacuuming up the lion's share of "website for therapists" business from general keywords?

Do you see what I'm saying? There's a bit of survivorship bias with longtail keywords it seems

@CholocateIT Yup. “Downloading institutional stress onto employees” is somethign that doesn’t get discussed enough.

@ddgrunau @iChris I’ll have to think about that.

(Off the top of my head: I know two Canadian ER doctors, and both have incredible margin in their lives)

@lwdupont Yes. I’ve seen all that.

But this is a company who spent $122 billion buying back their own shares. They have so much cash that could be invested for the social good.

$122B is enough to buy solar for 9 million homes. (I’m not saying they should do that; but showing the scale)

@jbrooksuk @HappyDevFM Btw - I think sponsorship is one approach, but Patreon would be perfect for a show like this.

There are (potentially) many devs who want to support mental health work like this.

@evanpro Investment in passenger rail is the kind of “ostentatious” spending I would support from @JustinTrudeau and the @Canada government.

Coast to coast, high-speed, reliable.
