@NathanTankus The only challenge for me (as an anxious Canadian) is always asking:

"How does this work in Canada?" 😅

@dvassallo @_rchase_ Yes! “Latent awareness” has a bunch of benefits. Having people rooting for us has been incredible. ❤️

But it’s not great at driving consistent demand. Other channels are far more reliable.

(However, leveraging those other channels is easier when you have an audience)

@misterparker It can work well (especially for info products), but a personal following can lead to a reverse conundrum:

fishing around for a problem/desire that a sufficient number of your (random) followers share.

@tylertringas I never said “literally just be a copycat.”

If Basecamp just copied Microsoft Project, they wouldn’t have succeeded.

Their advantage is they could come behind Microsoft and say: “you should switch from Project to us because of X, Y, Z.”

@GeoffTRoberts Often, companies who “break trail” don’t survive (and only end up paving the way for other companies who come later).

I think entrepreneurship is already hard; I’d rather not make it harder. 😉

@TheEricAnderson @dohertyjf Yes, AND... what people say they want (and what they actually do) are often profoundly different.

"Swimming with the current" is about observing (and responding) the way people actually *do* things, not the way they say they'd like to (or the way we wish they would).

@justinvincent I still think building an audience is still a good idea. 👍

But I think the direct link between "build your audience so you can launch/market your product" is more tenuous.

(Especially for SaaS)

Info products, paid communities, and paid newsletters definitely benefit.

@stefanmanku Yes: because the more you understand the market, the more you’ll understand what you should build.

@stefanmanku 1. What strengths do I have in this market? What are my competitive advantages?

2. What is the growth trajectory of the category?

3. What kind of margins could I have?

How do you know if it's a bad idea?

For me, it’s about desired results and the amount of effort that’s required to achieve and sustain those results.

Example: a business that you need to make $100k/year but consistently only does $60k/year (despite multi-year investment).

@dvassallo I like that metaphor!

So many people are just glad to have caught a train (any train!) but as soon as you notice you’re headed the wrong direction, you need to get off that train!!

Before @stripe, I might not have explicitly told you I needed a new credit card processing service, but I was sure happy when they showed up!

The best markets have so much demand that people just *show up* without you doing any marketing.

@wilburpowery @joecampo @tillkruss @ianlandsman Again, I don't understand why you folks are so cynical.

Apple makes $1 billion A DAY.

If Basecamp has made a billion, it took them 21 YEARS to do it.

The scale here (both in terms of revenue and power) is completely different.

@ianlandsman @joecampo Hahaha. Dude. I honestly can't believe that you (who's built software before) would think that a company might:

a) Just look at the app store and see what other email apps were doing.
b) Not understand the rules when they didn't previously apply to the other apps they'd launched
