The creator economy is mostly prosumers. (That’s how I started)

Other products like this: ConvertKit, Carrd, Tailwind UI, Substack, etc

@FlegeDaniel Different scenario: by that time Facebook was a juggernaut.

But it’s difficult for upstart “indie” social apps to survive.

Twitter is already working on @TwitterSpaces.

@__tosh Wikipedia is heavily moderated and edited.

That’s what Clubhouse feels like it’s missing to me.

It’s magical when you catch a smart (well moderated) conversation, but often this means returning to old formats (a host who keeps things going, limits people’s speaking time, etc)

@ianmisner I think using a platform like Twitter, YouTube, etc to help build your platform is fine (and a good strategy), as long as you’re not reliant on them for your distribution + monetization.

@fortelabs - French words like “toque” are used way more than the American equivalent (beanie).
- Quebec cities like Montreal and Quebec City are what many Canadian cities aspire to be (architecturally, urban design)
- all packaging has English and French translation (cereal boxes, etc)

@fortelabs In Canada, I feel like “Quebec culture” still has a really strong impact:

- most English schools offer French
- many schools in English Canada offer full French immersion
- many of our politicians (Trudeau) are from Quebec and/or French speaking
- Every restaurant sells poutine

👥 The market you serve

Let's say an artist has "1,000 true fans." To hit her revenue numbers:

🎵 On iTunes, each fan would need to buy 3-4 new tracks per month. (Difficult, but not impossible)

🟢 On Spotify, each fan would need to stream her music 357 times per month.

📉 Sales volume

🎵 On iTunes, an artist needed to sell 3,623 tracks to earn $2,500 in a month.

🟢 On Spotify, she needs to get 357,143 streams to earn $2,500 in a month.

Because of poor unit economics, the volume required to hit baseline has gone WAY up.

I found that traversing “the gaps” as a generalist was hard (“damn, who’s going to hire me at the salary I need?”), but once your breakthrough in certain positions it’s all upside.

Your passion might create the spark that gets you into business, but it’s customer demand that pulls you forward.

If passion = 100, but demand is = 0, you’ve got no business.

To last a long time, you’ll likely need both: passion and customer demand.

But at a base level: no demand = no business.

At least with competitor pain you’re starting from a place where the demand exists.

@harriskenny @heyhey The academic definition is "the total quantity demanded across all consumers in a market for a given good."

For me, "a market" is the sum of these factors:

- Number of potential customers
- How much they spend
- The frequency at which they buy
- Their willingness to pay

If there's no movement, at some scale, then it's likely not a market worth pursuing for bootstrappers.
