@ianlandsman In the midst of the climate crisis, every emerging tech needs to be evaluated.

We need a way of extrapolating what the future ecological costs are going to be.

Our mistake, in the past, was we didn’t have enough scrutiny around externalities and ecological costs.

@marckohlbrugge I agree; and that's why I'm open to it.

Also feels like this is the time to ask "the hard questions" vis-a-vis:

- ecological impacts
- sociological impacts of total decentralization
- true geopolitical effects of total decentralization

@DanielZarick But that’s the thing. It wasn’t actually that big of a jump at the time.

“It’s like listening to the radio, but I can customize the shows I listen to.”

I don’t see “small iterative jumps” like this with crypto.

Instead, I’m getting a lot of “giant world-changing” evangelism.

👩‍🔬 This is a key tenet of science as well:

"Scientists do sometimes change their minds in the face of new evidence, but this is a strength of science, not a weakness, that scientists continue to learn and to be open to new ways of thinking about old problems."

They actually don’t need to build anything else for this to work: it’s all right there.

It’s the simplest way to attribute marketing campaigns with SaaS revenue.

It gets even more complicated if you have a free trial.

Google Analytics just wasn’t built for SaaS’s customer lifecycle:

trial, conversion, upgrade, cancel, reactivate

Trust me, if you have to replicate all the customer info you have in Stripe in GA, things will get messy.

@gilesvangruisen @mattwensing You're misunderstanding how I use the word "margin."

But also margin for your time, your emotional and physical health, your relationships, your sanity, and your integrity. You're a human, and humans need breathing room."

@mattwensing From my POV, "FB millionaires" don't have as good of a life as "bootstrapped millionaires."

Not saying it's for everyone, but there's something about building a small, calm, profitable company that gives you a different kind of margin:

@shaisc My guess is there are multiple ways of looking at this:

Building in public is easier when things are going well.

A big part of building in public is storytelling.

Building in public can mean different things: for some, it's just sharing screenshots and WIP, for others: revenue

@KeliWestgate So much activism is finger wagging at individuals... instead of us as individuals turning around (as a group!) and finger-wagging corporations, business leaders, and government officials.

Collectively, we can (and should) pressure the largest emitters, and govts who set policy.

Useful tools take away pain and help people make progress.

Here's how @decksetapp helps customers:

"Take away the frustration of creating attractive slides so that I can focus on delivering an awesome presentation."

Here's how that promise translates on their marketing page:

@alanklement Case study: why did I buy @decksetapp?

- I wanted my slides to look as good as @SamuelHulick's
- Spent hours trying to design my own
- Failed; tried to buy PowerPoint theme and customize it
- Got frustrated; wasn't working on my talk!
- Saw DeckSet slides. They look good!

I didn’t say it happens every time, but it is a risk when investors pour too much money into a category or a company.

Industries need “the right amount” of capital to grow; but too much can be disastrous.

You gauge the strength of demand by the evidence of existing behavior:

How much effort are people applying right now to solve this problem?

How strong is the existing behavior?

How strong is the incentive for them to seek a solution?

There is a prevailing belief that “great founders create new innovations out of thin air.”

In truth, product ideas emerge from pre-existing human behavior.

You can convince people to switch from horses to cars by targeting the existing desire (fast, efficient transportation).

Human behavior is iterative; it doesn’t spontaneously appear out of thin air.

New desires grow out of pre-existing conditions: what we’ve done, wanted, and bought in the past.

Good ideas don’t emerge out of darkness; they’re built on an existing foundation.
