4/ This gave me an idea:

Over the summer, I hired Ferdinand (with personal money) to build a Laravel app I've always wanted.

The aim was to get him to build a fully functional SaaS app (with Stripe billing) using @Laravelphp, Alpine, @LaravelLivewire, @tailwindcss

3/ Enter Ferdinand, a CompSci grad I met at a hack night. He built an AI bot that synthesized my voice on Discord. Impressive!

Despite his skills, Ferdinand struggled to land his first job. Dozens of interviews, no offers. The classic catch-22: No experience, no job.

2/ A while back, I talked about the "pipeline problem:"

• Bootcamps teach JS, React, Next.js
• Not many juniors are learning Rails/Laravel
• Rails/Laravels shops want experienced devs
• But we're not cultivating new talent

This cycle hurts the Laravel/Rails ecosystems.

1/ Here's a story about:

- How the @laravelphp / @Rails communities can fix the "pipeline problem"
- How we can help junior devs get their first gig
- A secret summer project (and a new SaaS)

@JohnONolan @hackersincpod @adamwathan At Laracon, we joked that "each of us found the other person's business problems/complaints easy to solve."

What's a struggle each of you is having with your business, and how would the other person solve it?

@JohnONolan @hackersincpod @adamwathan From the outside, you two have built high-growth businesses with strong annual revenues.

When it comes to managing highly visible open-source projects as the foundation of your businesses, what are the downsides most people don't see?

A poignant anecdote from @itsurboyevan's newsletter:

"A few years ago, I was at a dinner with the head of one of the largest private equity funds in the U.S. This guy had made it. His suits were crisp and Italian. His car was so fast it left feelings of poverty in its wake. His…

"A substantial part of 'founder mode' hinges on building an org around good judgment.

• You need to have excellent judgment in your problem area.
• You need to recognize the importance of good judgment as a phenomenon.
• You need to demand it in others." https://twitter.com/patrickc/status/1835434966072836483

🎯 Also true in business.

“There is no formula for success—you just begin and then you continue. I’m often asked how to have a career in stand-up and the answer is confoundingly simple: Do the work. Over and over again, just do the work. After you build the courage to get…

@shaunmmaguire Using a single anecdote to suggest a broader pattern about a group of people is what’s heinous.

This applies to Trump’s debate assertion, and what’s being asserted here.

I read the whole article, and I’m confused why you would consider this “real journalism.”

"Superhuman mode" is seductive for entrepreneurs.

The idea you can "will" anything into existence through sheer effort is intoxicating.

It's crucial at the start, but unsustainable long-term.

@valsopi Retail in a small market is already a bad setup.

Very few "make it" (keep their doors open), and even fewer (less than 1%, I'll bet) make a reasonable personal income.

If you've been running a business for a while, and it's grinding you down, I made a video for you:
