Had an amazing dinner last night with @andrewculver and his wife.

Forgot to take a group photo, but I did take a picture of this giant pork shank.

“The young killers in almost every modern industry rely on fluid intelligence. They learn quickly, focus hard on what matters, and devise solutions.”

“The true decline happened…in their forties. From my outsider’s view it looked like a weariness had set in.”

I sent out a draft of an upcoming blog post about “how our capacity for Fluid Intelligence declines in our 40s.”

Surprised by how many people have responded!

“This hits hard; I’m feeling that slow decline. I don’t have boundless energy anymore. So hard to learn anything new.”

There are some things you practice for 10,000 hours and you become world class.

And there are other things you practice for 100,000 hours and your skills stay roughly the same.

Like beatboxing.

@wking__ I think it's a good starting point.

(And to be clear, I've launched other SaaS businesses along the way as well)

Generally, I think @robwalling's "stair-step" approach is a good way to gain experience as an entrepreneur and gradually earn your freedom.

The best "buy once" product businesses have so much demand/distribution that you only need to launch them once. They'll reliably bring in new sales every month/year (similar to a SaaS).

SaaS/subscription businesses are way harder to build.

A launch-driven business will outperform a recurring revenue business in the short term.

However, a healthy recurring revenue business is more stable in the long term.

In the past, I've sold "launch-driven" products (plugins, buy-once software, courses).

Launch-driven businesses are exhausting. You're on a constant hamster wheel.

Recurring revenue has led to so much more calm. When it works, it provides a stable, dependable cash flow.

The Rails / Laravel pipeline problem:
https://justinjackson.ca/summer-project

- Young devs don't learn Laravel/Rails
- They learn React or Next instead
- There's a belief that "all the jobs are in React"

Therefore:

- It's hard to hire experienced Laravel/Rails devs

14/ P.S. Ferdinand is looking for his first full-time tech job.

I vouch for him:
• Fast learner
• Works independently
• Experienced with Laravel, Node, Django, React, Java

Check out his resume: https://ferdinand737.github.io/profile-page/

(Good bosses only!)

12/ I'm also curious to hear what you think about the Laravel/Rails "pipeline problem" and if hiring juniors for projects like this might be a good solution.

10/ We plan to launch @swagfanhq publicly in the next few weeks.

I want Ferdinand to experience the entire cycle of conceptualizing, building, and shipping a functional SaaS. It will be invaluable to him as a dev and give him a taste of what it's like to be an indie hacker. 😄

9/ I'm excited about this experiment for a few reasons:

• It solves a real problem we've had at Transistor
• It gave Ferdinand awesome real-world dev experience
• It demonstrates Laravel's strengths for building SaaS apps quickly

8/ Here's how @swagfanhq works:

• Connect your Printful store
• Create a swag giveaway link
• Choose which products you want to offer
• Share the link with fans/customers
• They pick their items, sizes, shipping info
• Printful handles printing and shipping automatically

6/ We've been using @printful to create merch and handle shipping and fulfillment.

I wanted an app where I could send people a link, let them choose their swag, select their size, enter their shipping details, and have Printful handle the rest.
