1. You have a strong financial engine or significant savings (full-time job)

2. Your spouse understands the risks, costs, and tradeoffs and is 100% onboard.

3. You have a strong sense of boundaries (and maintain them).

4. Your mental + physical health is good.

Anything else?

When is it a good time for a parent of young kids to think about bootstrapping a business?

Let's make a list 👉

@noahwbragg Notably, @aarondfrancis isn’t really going “all in” (which I think is healthy).

He’s still working a full-time job until his side-business has proven it can support him and his family.

In poker, going “all in” means betting everything on a hand.

For an indie business, you…

How many spouses of founders can identify with this? 😅

@iChris I wouldn’t worry about it.

There are still going to be podcasters who really want that “human ear” when editing/producing shows.

It might even become a differentiator that separates the mediocre shows from the really compelling ones.

@jonrojas @iChris @TransistorFM Even with *really* good AIs, I find I still need to go back in and do a lot of editing.

I think automated editing, show notes, transcriptions, etc.. work fine for folks who wouldn't normally hire an editor.

But an editor brings a much higher level of polish to a show. 👍

Despite all the AI tools in podcasting, there's still nothing better than having a human (in our case, @iChris):

a) edit our audio with care
b) add topic metadata to each section of the episode

(When uploaded to @TransistorFM, these topics automatically get added as chapters)

I've seen many parents start a business (hoping it will lead to "more family time") only to have the business consume most of their time, energy, and attention.

What was supposed to give them more freedom ended up robbing them of their freedom.

I'd love to hear from the spouses of bootstrapping founders to hear their feedback/thoughts.

Would also like to hear from female founders with young kids to hear their perspectives. 👍

Also: solo parents!

Hoping to do a follow-up episode with more viewpoints on this question.

Your customers have to:

a) be able to find you (distribution)
b) feel like you're the best choice (reputation)

This is why marketing is hard: in any market with incumbents, your product needs to fight for discoverability and reputation ("This is the best product to choose").

Once you've built a product that people want, these variables will affect your forward trajectory:

a) your product's reputation
b) the amount of distribution you can get

and

a) your competitors' reputation
b) which distribution channels your competitors own

I think about this a lot: we should evaluate why we wanted to start a business in the first place.

Often it’s: “so I can spend more time with my family” but when you’re building a business, it often takes your attention away from the family. https://twitter.com/mijustin/status/1464768410898743298

My experience won't match yours.

It's up to you (and your partner) to figure out what's best for you and your kids.

Culturally, many of us were taught to push the limits: pedal to the metal, give 110%, and turn your amp up to 11!

We max ourselves out in every area: our finances, our relationships, our health, and our careers.

It's OK to create space and calm for the season of life you're in.

Parenting small kids requires an enormous amount of energy.

If you're trying to do that *and* work a full-time job *and* bootstrap something on the side... that's just a lot.

If I had to do it again, I would:

a) just wait to bootstrap
or
b) raise funding so I could quit my job

My kids are older now (13-20), and life is way less hectic now that they're self-reliant.

I found bootstrapping on the side challenging when they were young (especially 0-3).

In retrospect, I'm not sure it was healthy to be building a new business when they were that young.

Hmm. Chrome has a feature that allows you to kind of save changes, but you have to edit in "Sources" as opposed to "Elements" (not ideal).

This will reduce the demand for intermediary products, often developed by indie devs.
