@asmartbear For me, I didn’t really feel like my business was profitable until it was paying me a full salary *and* enough extra $$$ to “pay me back” for all the other bets I’d made. 😅

@mckenna_andrew Some lessons, yes.

But the biggest lessons I’ve gained have been from watching and learning from people who achieved success.

They showed me what strong momentum looked like.

Lessons learned:

- don’t settle for mediocre results
- learn to make better bets (because they cost you something)
- momentum has a feeling: people showing up every day to buy what you’re offering

In my 20s, I started a few businesses that didn’t give me a better life: it was a grind, and we just weren’t getting ahead.

Generally, every time you start a small business you’re making a bet. The payoff should be a better life for you and your family. https://twitter.com/mijustin/status/1638562016536453120

Here are some of my highlights from this year's @PodcastMovement.

PM isn't perfect, but it brings podcast creators, providers, and platforms together in one place, and really does feel like a "summer camp for podcasters."

At a frequency that produces scale:

"The software business is all about volume." – @ianlandsman

Customer acquisition & retention needs to be repeatable at a scale that supports your desired outcome.

You’ll need a steady flow of new + existing customers.

Produce and distribute your product at a cost that generates good margins:

You might be in a great market with a strong product, but you don't have a business if you can't build, maintain, and promote that product profitably.

Distribution costs are particularly important.

Identify a product that the market wants to buy:

It's not enough to find a category with potential (web analytics, campaign tracking, UI components), you have to build a product that customers are motivated to buy.

Identify a good market (category, audience, industry, niche)

A "market" is really the sum of customer behavior in a category:

- Number of potential customers
- How much they spend
- The frequency at which they buy
- Their willingness to pay
- The forces that affect demand

"Identifying a good market (category, audience, niche) and then creating a product that the market wants to buy, at a cost that generates good margins, and at a frequency that produces scale."

For folks who have tried multiple accounting vendors (Xero, Quickbooks Online, Wave Apps), which is your favorite?

(Specifically, I need a solution that supports USD & CAD currencies, payroll, and connects with my bank accounts + Wise and PayPal.)

We're heading to Nashville (in 2 weeks) for our @TransistorFM team retreat!

Question: What are some (non-cringe) activities, games, and discussions that have been great for your remote team?

Our last retreat was amazing, but I'm always seeking new ways to increase connection ☺️

It feels like when I’m looking for info, there’s pressure to find the resource that’s going to give it to me fast. (Especially when I’m stressed).

Meanwhile, back in West Kelowna, this is how fast that fire consumed the region.

Devastating for so many. Lots of homes lost. 💔
