If 2017 was hard for solopreneurs, next year is going to be even harder.

The old rules don't apply anymore. Things have changed.

Let's make 2018 our best year yet: https://megamaker.co/make2018/

One way to define your target niche:

"[People] who want to achieve X but struggle with Y."

Example:
"Content marketers who want to run A/B tests but struggle with getting consistent traffic from the right sources."

Yes!

This is exactly what happened with MailChimp. When they started, nobody (especially Outlook, Hotmail or Gmail) wanted to touch bulk email newsletters with a ten foot pole.

Just a boring, super messy problem (have you tried coding an HTML email? 😱)

Another example of a narrowly defined niche, with huge market size:

"Software devs making online shopping carts."

Stripe's early growth was fuelled by those folks!

What I love about Laravel is it was a big, "uncool" opportunity.

All the hipsters had all moved to Ruby and Rails, but there was this huge group of PHP devs that wanted to stay in PHP.

@taylorotwell saw the need, and made PHP cool again.

You can't make a living off *every* niche. Some are just too small.

Your niche should be narrowly defined, but sizeable in numbers.

(This is why Laravel is such a fantastic niche. It's for PHP devs who want a Rails-like framework. Pretty narrow definition, but a huge market).

In 2018, unique/different/weird will determine who breaks through the noise.

You can't use the same messaging/design/features as your competitors.

The idea is to give your customers an experience that makes them say: "Wow, that was totally unique and unexpected, but awesome."

This year I've reviewed hundreds of landing pages. This one from @eggheadio is really well done:

https://egghead.io/gifts

It's all about the words. The headlines grab you. Start by digging into the pain, and then show visitors how you make their lives better.

(kudos @jhooks!)

“More usage” ≠ “Better for the user”

Sometimes less usage is what they need. That should be ok.

Don’t build your business models on more “time on page / time watching video / more interaction.”

Your business model should correlate with better outcomes for users.

Apple says “health” is a big part of their future plans for iOS.

If this is true, they should have settings that help people *reduce* the use of their devices.

@wahabind @Abiola_Usman In our case, the reverse was true.

We put way more effort into the $19 plan, because we thought it would give us more growth.

The $99 was essentially ignored (hardly any marketing). But it was the one that grew the fasts test, had the least churn, and least complaints.

In most cases, your best customer is going to be an employee who has the company credit card, and doesn't need to get approval.

(It's easy to spend someone else's money)

This is why *solopreneurs* don't always make good customers. They're spending *their* money!
