Give people progress when they feel stuck!

Examples:
- Stripe (getting a merchant account required pages of paperwork)
- Shopify (creating an ecommerce store required multiple difficult steps)
- MailChimp (you can't send thousands of email through Gmail)

Somebody in πŸ‡¨πŸ‡¦ please fix small business banking.

I'm with @scotiabank currently and paying really high fees:
- $1 for email transfers
- $20 - $30 / month for my CAD account
- $20 - $50 / month for my USD account

People complain.

They complain when things are good, they complain when things are bad.

If you messed up, own it and move on.

But...

Remember, sometimes people complain even when things are AMAZING.

So don’t let it get to you.

It’s ok to get excited by hype.

Just make sure you test it out for yourself.

Do your results match the hype?

If not, move on.

The only "yes" that feels good is the "OH HELL YES."

What doesn't feel good:
- "OK, I guess I could do that."
- "Umm, maybe in a few months?"
- "Sure, I can probably do that for you."

Most of the time, saying "no" feels way better.

Another thing that doesn't get talked about: being exceptional is an *incredible* amount of work.

Those of us who achieve any sort of greatness know how fleeting it can be. There's always someone younger, hungrier, faster, stronger.

It's a new rat race, on a whole new level.

We don't need new disruptive hardware + software tech.

What we need is new disruptive SOCIAL technologies.

We have very few of these.

Universal basic income is promising, but needs way more testing.

And, we'll need more than just UBI to survive the next 100 years.

Tech companies are moving faster than society can adapt.

The richest 3% own over 50% of the world's wealth.

They also own most of the IP and equity in the tech that's going to disrupt millions of workers.

Most Americans have less than $1,000 in savings.

This is bad.

I used to love tech so much. Up until now, so much of our progress has felt empowering: "I can create anything, on my own!"

But now I'm disheartened because tech has advanced so fast it's leaving a huge part of our society behind.

@smithtimmytim I've got more on this (because I struggle with the same feelings as you).

I think folks like us can thrive if we "skill stack," or "layer" our characteristics into something truly unique.

Having an audience of 500+ fans will be a big win in the future.

@smithtimmytim I think you're exceptional.

You're more than a designer. You have additional characteristics that make you very unique:

1. Charisma
2. Good on video + audio + words
3. Your own POV
4. Ability to build an audience

We're also in a "self-employment" honeymoon.

For example, lots of folks now drive for Uber as contractors. They make more money than they would driving taxi... for now.

Self-driving cars are ALREADY picking up passengers in Phoenix.

Those "good" Uber jobs won't last.

Months ago I made a video: "How to save your kids from πŸ€–": https://youtu.be/KVoMoe6MTvo

The advice is hard to give, because it's basically: "become an exceptionally unique superhuman."

The old rules are disappearing faster than we can find new solutions for the whole population.

Because the difference *now* is that robotics, automation, AI will be disrupting millions of jobs in a short period of time.

As consumers, we're still in the honeymoon phase. We ❀️ "this moment" because we're getting access to:

- nicer restaurants
- higher quality software & hardware
- more choices in entertainment
- bigger selection & cheaper prices

But, all of this ☝️will affect workers + SMBs.

My friend @chris_hawk puts it this way, and I agree with him:

"Increasingly, there are the 'super winners' who take the lion's share of the attention and revenue; and then there's everyone else."

The middle ground is crumbling.

For workers, the rules are changing faster than ever.

A degree used to be your ticket to a good job. That's not good enough anymore; now, you've got to be Ivy League.

To get hired nowadays, you've got to have a good network. Your resume's not good enough.

Small business case study: Squarespace put tons of "pretty good" freelance web developers out of business.

Folks that were making their living on $1,500 sites couldn't compete.

Some went upmarket, others got day jobs. But many haven't been able to replace that work.

In the future, robotics, automation, centralization, and globalization are going to put millions more workers out of work, and many more companies out of business.

Previously these folks had "somewhere to go," but increasingly that's not the case.

I'm not sure how I feel about this, but increasingly I think it's true:

In today's economy, you can't be mediocre. Actually, it's harder than that: you can't even be "pretty good."

You've got to differentiate yourself by being truly exceptional and unique.
