Google started as a research project in 1996.

Larry and Sergey didn't incorporate until 1998.

Early in 1999, they tried selling Google for $750k (and got turned down).

They didn't find a business model (ads) until late 2000.

Idea → viable business took 4 years.

@arlogilbert 🤔 Sorry, are you saying that a shorter, intense sprint (2 weeks, 1 month, whatever) will return better health gains than slow gains over year and years?

Arguably, MailChimp's "slow gains" over time look pretty impressive now...

MailChimp was a side-project for 6 years.

Todoist was a side-project for 4 years.

Basecamp took 2 years before it was paying their salaries.

Maybe the rest of us shouldn't be in such a hurry.

@dchymko Definitely my Twitter audience (because it isn't potable).

But email I'm fine, because I can take that list of contacts anywhere. (It's open and distributed. 👍)

@dchymko In some ways, I'm OK with that. I don't mind supporting private businesses! It's the amount of power we're giving Amazon in our industry that worries me.

My friend @jonfriesen also mentions that Kubernetes could also help fight the centralization of internet power:

"If you do it right you can switch from cloud provider to cloud provider with relative ease."

I guess the industry term for this is "Decentralized Cloud Computing."

(and it sounds like companies like @storjproject are working on it)

There's definitely been a lot of anti-FB/Amazon/Google sentiment lately. I wonder if we'll see a return to more distributed solutions.

@matthewcrist Interesting. Does it socialize the computing power? Or is it just for your own assets?

🏭 While platforms like AWS are great, I worry about centralizing all that power in Amazon's hands.

🤔 I wonder if we could return to keeping servers under our desks, but leverage new distributed computing tech to give us the same redundancy + scalability.

Quickly deleted what I wrote, and changed it to:

"Jon can you take a look at this case for me?"

Crisis averted. 👍

"Jon, I'm going to need you to look at this support case."

And then it hit me.

Oh no.

YES, being a solopreneur can give you freedom and flexibility.

BUT, there are risks you should consider.

AND, there are ways to minimize those risks.

Being a solopreneur has risks.

(That don't get talked about enough)

You get 100% of the upside, but you also bear all of the risks.

If you get sick, or if something doesn't go as planned, there's no one there to pick up the slack.

I know a lot of folks don't like Black Friday (the emails, the crowds, the commercialism). I get it!

But, for a lot of small companies, this is a once a year chance to:

1. Give folks a deal (which feels good!)
2. Earn a big chunk of their annual revenue
