"I prefer to do this the way I've always done it."

โ˜๏ธ Changing people's habits is hard.

"This is the way we've always done it" has a huge gravitational pull.

If your product is continually fighting this gravity, you're going to have a hard time.

โ˜๏ธ it was hanging out with @JamesClear and then reading his book that really kickstarted this for me.

I realized I couldn't keep hanging out in my "gutter."

This is what I love about the @rails community.

A newbie (me๐Ÿ™‹โ€โ™‚๏ธ) asks a newbie question.

Tons of folks show up in chat to help.

@jmcharnes (from @podia) calls me on Skype and walks me through the whole thing. ๐Ÿ™Œ

Love this line from @asmartbear's latest essay:

"The 'long tail' can sound appealing, but it sure is easy to sell vanilla ice cream at the beach even when youโ€™re right next to another ice cream stand."

So true! ๐Ÿฆ๐Ÿ–๏ธ

@mattwensing @AndrewAskins The broader point is that you're always leveraging a network (platform) bigger than yourself.

In that case, both Craigslist and the App Store apply.

Certainly, every high growth business seems to be built on someone else's platform.

iPod was built on of MP3 and Napster.

iPhone was built on iPod, Blackberry, and device subsidies from cell carriers.

App Store was built on iPhone (and earlier work done by Palm).

@phillipsharring That's the thing I'm trying to unravel a bit.

"Target a niche" has become cliche internet business wisdom these days, but it seems that the platform you build on is just as important.

We like to think that entrepreneurs are building something out of nothing, but that's almost impossible.

You're always building on top of something.

General Motors, for example, benefitted greatly when the federal government started publicly funding freeways.

Arguably, most tech businesses are built off someone else's platform:

- Indie Hackers was built off Hacker News.
- Airbnb was built off Craigslist.
- Most podcast businesses are built off Apple Podcasts.

The internet itself was originally someone else's platform (U.S. Gov)

๐Ÿค” Thinking out loud here:

The size of the platform you target is a big multiplier for how successful your business will be.

Example:
"My niche is Facebook ads"
"My niche is Shopify stores"
"My niche is PHP developers"
"My niche is foodies on Instagram"
