When things are going badly we tend to add complexity: “Let’s try adding another thing to the mix and see if it works.”

What we should be doing is making things more simple: “Let’s focus on one or two things and see if we can turn this around.”

The way to reduce your risk, is to “reduce the number of things which have to go right.”

In it, he points out that the longer your list of “things that have to go right” the more likely it is you’ll fail.

I’ve had projects where the road to success was dependent on multiple things going my way.

For things to work out, I would need a “perfect storm.”

I realize now why so few of those projects succeeded.

@asmartbear Really great piece Jason!

I’ve thought a lot about “multiplying the ‘ands’” but I’m now seeing the power of reducing the “ands!”

@deadcoder0904 Yup, in a variety of ways.

First, we’ve definitively had people sign up because of the podcast.

But second, and more importantly, it’s meant that Jon and I talk on the phone every week.

At $30k / month, Jon and I can both be full-time on Transistor.

We're earning a living, doing work we enjoy, for customers we like.

This has been our aim from the beginning: to build a great product, while at the same time having a great life. 👌

@TransistorFM I realize this might not mean much on the "Silicon Valley scale."

(Heck, just paying a single dev salary + taxes + benefits in SF can run you over $30k / month)

BUT, for bootstrappers like @jonbuda and I, this is a big deal.

Outside of SF, $30k gives you a lot of mileage.

RT @adamwathan: When it comes to achieving financial freedom, being able to create is a superpower.

Here's a short story about why...

So far, in 2019, I've had 277 alcohol-free days.

Feels good. 👌

@adamwathan Yup! It’s true!

Also: a good reminder to be a nice human. People pick that up!

Beyond attracting initial customers, building an audience is also helpful because it improves:

1. Your connections: who you know, and who knows you.
2. Your skills: the value you can add to the world.

Here's another question I received:

"How much of your growth do you attribute to having built a following beforehand?"

It definitely helped in the beginning (for our first ~100 customers), but after that, SEO, content, and affiliates became more important channels.

Also, running those big businesses seems like a world of pain compared to this nice small business that Jon and I are building. 😉

Question: "It seems like Transistor doesn't have as much mindshare as Libsyn, Blubbry, and other big podcast hosts. What's going to be your big differentiator?"

First, Jon and I don't necessarily want to be as big as those companies! Competitively, we just think about our users.
