@msitver @Overcast By “quick consumption” I mean, a video feels “lighter.” Most folks have 5 minutes to watch a video.

A 40 minute podcast, by contrast, feels a lot heavier.

Incidentally, this doesn’t just affect small, indie podcasts.

On the latest episode of Startup, @abexlumberg said they had two main challenges:

- getting their shoes in front of more people
- finding new audiences for their shows

Apple Podcasts is probably doing the most for discoverability right now:

- editorialized homepage recommendations
- algorithm-driven recommendations (“You might also like...”)
- podcast charts (based on subscriber momentum)

It’s “OK,” but could definitely be improved.

Apps had a single marketplace (the App Store); one place to search for, and discover, new apps.

Podcast discovery is spread across multiple directories and apps (Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Google Search, Podchaser, PodHunt, Podyssey).

A podcast listener has to cross a greater threshold than someone reading and article (or watching a video).

Deciding to listen to a podcast is a commitment; you want to know that it’s going to be worth it.

You can easily link to a podcast, but (unlike video and web articles) they won’t be consumed immediately.

On the web, a steady stream of links to your article / video generally increases your audience. But that technique doesn’t help podcasts as much.

Podcasts already have distribution (RSS to Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Google Podcasts).

What they don’t have:
- easy discoverability
- easy amplification
- quick consumption
