Who gets hired? Folks who are known for something.

How do you get known? You make waves! You share what you know. You challenge the status quo.

🚨 Companies: don't silence (or worse, fire) employees who make waves!

Yes, they can be harder to manage, but they're invaluable. These are the folks who create forward momentum!

(They're only a pain in that they'll challenge your company's inertia)

🌊 MAKE WAVES

Be known for something! Speak up. Share your thoughts (blog, podcast, video). Run experiments and publish the results. Don't be obnoxious, but have the courage to challenge the status quo. Craft your own point of view.

Three years ago today, I was coming out of the worst depression/burnout of my life.

Just as I was seeing some rays of sunlight, I wrote this.

"Sometimes, after drifting for a long time, you wake up. You realize you're off course. If that's you, it's not too late." ❤️

Is it just me, or has everything really slowed down lately?

- Less emails
- Less meetings
- Less customer support
- Less activity in Slack groups I'm in

Is there a collective "let's take it easy" now that we've hit late summer? 🏖️

I like this metaphor.

So many people are just glad to have caught a train (any train!) but as soon as you notice you’re headed the wrong direction, you need to get off that train!!

One caveat: accumulated effort only works if you’re (mostly) paddling in the right direction.

Trying to paddle upstream? That’s *wasted* effort.

“I can’t overstate the importance of the accumulation of previous efforts.” – @yongfook

☝️ I like this idea of accumulated efforts!

Do stuff! Meet people, write, create new things, put yourself out there, experiment, learn new skills.

It’s “gradual and then sudden.”

If you have a new take on an established category, you’ll often discover pent-up demand:

“Thanks goodness you started something! I’ve been waiting for someone to come and shake things up.”

(Examples: Stripe, @TransistorFM, Square, @mightycal_, Slack, @tuple, @wpengine)

@DanielZarick It’s true. I think if you don’t have a good sense of some good opportunities right away though... you should find a partner who does.

Otherwise, how will you compete?

If don’t have any ideas on how you’re going to reach people, that’s a bad sign. (You probably don’t belong in that market)

What kinds of tweets do they like?
What podcasts do they listen to?
What search terms do they use?
What newsletters do they read?
What events do they go to?

I get questions like this all the time: “What are the best marketing channels I can use to reach my market?”

How should I know!? It’s *your* market. You should be the expert! (That’s the point).

What works in my market likely won’t work for you.

When you’re in a strong market, and it’s a good fit for you as a founder, finding good distribution channels shouldn’t be a mystery.

If you know something about the market, you should have a pretty good idea on how you’ll reach people!

You’ll see evidence for existing demand everywhere:

- folks cobbling together their own solution in Excel
- users using multiple apps to complete a single task
- seeing the same question over and over again in Slack
- lots of people buying the same type of good at the same time

I think a lot of product people interpret “build something people want” as “build something people might like.”

Don’t guess! Look for existing demand.

Build something in a category that people want; and make it better than the existing options.

@robinc @laravelphp PHP is like JavaScript: it’s everywhere, it’s not going away, and it’s getting better.

Sure, @taylorotwell could have built a framework on a different language, but it’s *what he’s done with it* that’s compelling.

The community & innovation is what keeps me coming back.
