2. What is the growth trajectory of the category?

3. What kind of margins could I have?

@arvidkahl I think in our context, audience largely means “a group of people who have assembled to follow someone on Twitter, blog, podcast, newsletter, etc”

It’s key characteristic is that it’s attached to a person.

“I’m in Jerry Seinfeld’s audience.”

Purchase-intent usually shows itself as "potential customers searching for a solution."

Recognizing that demand, and later, creating supply, doesn't necessarily require you to have an audience.

Increasingly, I think the idea of “build an audience before you build your product” is misguided.

An audience is *helpful* for launching into a category, but isn’t enough on its own.

You need true market momentum.

What does demand look like, practically?

It’s people *already in motion.*

They’re already searching.
They’re already thinking about it.
They’re already trying to solve the problem.

a product category where there was a lot of demand.

Bad ideas are hungry: they consume whatever energy, money, or time you throw at them, without giving you anything back.

@ChristianUffel I was just using that as an example; I agree that (in business) you should know before that.

But even ideas that seem good after customer interviews may still not have the momentum you need.

At each stage (pre-launch, launch, first 6 months, etc) you need to feel it out.

How do you know if it's a bad idea?

For me, it’s about desired results and the amount of effort that’s required to achieve and sustain those results.

Example: a business that you need to make $100k/year but consistently only does $60k/year (despite multi-year investment).

I've worked on hundreds of ideas that just weren't that great.

Working *harder* and *longer* on these mediocre ideas didn't produce better results.

Exploring those ideas lead me to where I am today, but I'm glad I didn't stick with them.

A series of bad ideas can lead to a good idea.

But it's unlikely that focusing on a mediocre idea will transform it into something great.
