It's idealistic, but I often think about @harari_yuval's description of hunter-gatherers:

"[Farmers] worked harder [and their] lives were generally more difficult and less satisfying. Hunter-gatherers spent their time in more stimulating ways. "

No schedule = bliss.

@jongold I have experienced the benefit of time blocking in the past too.

(Especially if I need to build a habit)

But once the habit is built, having it in my calendar hasn't been as helpful.

@magnus_singer @Shopify @tobi I love that you're exploring this!

I'm just seeing that the problem (the challenge) is that it's easy to find *everything* on Amazon.

To compete, independents are going to need to leverage a shared network of inventory.

The only productivity advice that's consistently worked for me is:

"Don't do so much."

✅ Fewer projects
✅ Fewer meetings
✅ Fewer commitments
✅ Fewer things to maintain

In the past, I've had phases where I wanted every section of my calendar blocked off.

But these days, I want my calendar to look like this.

BREATHING ROOM.

If being productive =
- having to wake up at 4am
- filling every block in my calendar
- feeling like I'm "go go go" all the time

... then I don't want to be productive.

@magnus_singer @Shopify @tobi Yes. But increasingly I’m seeing that this needs to come from the platform itself (Shopify), otherwise it will be too difficult to achieve the necessary scale.

@Shopify @tobi What indie businesses really need is an alternative to Amazon’s search engine.

Shopify should be helping indie shops network their inventories together to create a giant (searchable) inventory powered by small shops.

@theleviallen That’s less true now.

Ultimately, you want lots of people subscribing and listening on both Apple Podcasts and Spotify.

That will determine your position on the charts.

DoorDash and UberEats have shown us that rapid, local delivery is possible.

But... the incentives are mis-aligned.

Local shops should own delivery co-ops.

The biggest problem for local shops: their inventory is hidden from most local consumers.

That inventory needs to be made visible, and searchable, online.

1. Help local shops get their inventory online.
2. Network this inventory together with other shops.
3. Make it searchable

@tylertringas Previously, the idea with annual plans is that you could pump all that “up-front cash” into more customer acquisition (namely, with ads).

But recently, it’s felt like paid acquisition channels aren’t working as well, so there’s been less of a drive for annual plans.

There are challenges at each stage of your business income journey.

What questions do you have, at the stage you're at now?

It feels like there are 3 stages of making money as an indie maker:

- Not enough money: not earning enough to cover basic bills.
- “Just squeaking by": earning *just* enough to cover bills, but not really thriving.
- Abundant money: lots of margin.

Which stage are you at?

That being said, so far my kids want to be:

- a Physics teacher
- a Professor of linguistics
- an engineer in space
- a farmer or wood worker

So basically... the exact opposite of me. 😂
