"Software developers" is market like no other:

1. Individuals are highly incentivized in their careers to gain more skills, learn on their own time, explore new tools.

2. Employers are highly incentivized to keep devs happy, improve productivity, buy tools that optimize, etc. https://twitter.com/r00k/status/1364697905706258435

@derrickreimer @r00k ☝️ it’s still pretty new, but you might enjoy what @jam_systems is doing (open-source Clubhouse alternative that’s web based)

I’ve done a few, and recorded the last one.

@foundingmom The new trend of "paying for content" is a healthy one I think.

Folks are happily paying for private podcasts, Substack newsletters, etc.

These days, we genuflect to the platforms.

We optimize our content for them, praying that the algorithm gods will reward us.

But we shouldn’t forget that it was our links, our sitemaps, our writing, our video, our open source code, and our data that built these platforms.

@foundingmom I’m not sure!

I think investing in the open internet is part of the answer (RSS, HTTP, email).

Decentralized social networks (like Mastadon) haven’t worked yet, but maybe they could?

Without our:

- Data
- Usage
- Content
- Connections
- Word of mouth

... the big platforms have no "network effects."

We built this city.

The truth is, most indie creators need to do arbitrage on platforms (FB, Twitter, etc) in order to grow their audience or acquire customers.

(Google Search being the big one)

I think that's OK.

It's users (like us) who made these networks significant in the first place!

@foundingmom I think it's ok to do arbitrage on these platforms: it's OK to use them (while they're good) and create new connections, as long as we're not dependent on them.

@dr @coreyhainesco This is a good point!

I'll push back just a bit: anything that demands our attention is competing with... other things that demand our attention.

In that sense, Clubhouse is a competitor to podcasts in the same way that Netflix and "walking without headphones on" is.

Who created these big social graphs in the first place?

(Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, Clubhouse...)

WE DID.

We joined.
We uploaded our contacts.
We invited (and tagged) our friends.
We shared tweets, photos, and discussions.

But now these companies own the network.

It's a vicious cycle:

1. New social platform grabs your contacts from your address book.

2. You (and millions of others) help create an incredible ecosystem where connection thrives.

3. Platform locks down your reach and monetizes by selling ads (or your data).

@johnlpollard @MrAsquith Any app has the potential to turn the tide, so I'm trying to be cautious. 😅

My hypothesis is that the average user's sessions (and session time) will decrease dramatically after 2-3 months. We'll see if I'm right!

Even Mark Zuckerberg got in trouble for spending too much time on Clubhouse! 😜

"I promised Priscilla that I was only going to be on here for five minutes. Gotta listen to the boss."

It's easy to get sucked in.

@jasonfried @JordanGal @CasJam I agree, but I think Clubhouse is even more exclusionary:

You need both headphones in. It's very "active." There's no pause, no mute, no rewind.

YouTube playing in the background still allows for some family interaction.

But an app that doesn't allow you to pause/mute? 🙅‍♂️

A lot of Clubhouse events happen in the evening and on weekends.

To join, you have to shut yourself away from your family.

This means Clubhouse rooms over-index on folks without kids. By the nature of the tech, it excludes a big demographic.

@web Yes! I spoke about this when the pandemic initially hit.

Local delivery networks could even be faster + more efficient.

Especially if autonomous delivery (via robots) could be democratized.

Podcasts feel like the open-sourcing of human experience.

Inner code, that’s usually kept private, is revealed.

As a listener, you get a window into how people truly think and feel.

It’s cathartic to hear someone express a feeling you’ve also had: “I’ve felt that too!”

@JackEllis @earthlingworks @r00k I just (personally) can't identify with that feeling of success feeling like "nothing."

To me, it feels like everything. It's full of substance and possibility.

If I'm 10x more successful, that just feels like there's 10x more possibility. More purposeful ways to use the money.

@r00k Maybe it's because I have kids?

Once I had kids, my money always had a purpose; it was never really for me.

From age 22 on, there's been a constant struggle to make ends meet.

So now, the money (and the peace of mind it brings) feels deeply fulfilling.
