We talk about bootstrapping in the context of a real human life. Mortgage, kids, spouse, and dwindling personal bank accounts!

How do you deal with the stress and the pressure that's created by trying to build something out of nothing? How do you make good decisions?

Podcast search is broken.

A search for "Paul Simon" should bring me the best episodes about the singer-songwriter.

@ListenNotes and @Breaker results are pretty good. iTunes and Overcast, not great.

Yesterday on the podcast, @jonbuda answered some listener questions, and we talked openly about revenue, splitting equity, and the challenges of running a software company.

⚡ Great insight from @josh_earl:

"The biggest factor for unsubscribes is not the content of the email. It’s how many people OPEN the email in the first place. For every 100 opens, 1-3 will unsubscribe."

Just did the math on my list. Almost exactly 1-3%!

@adamwathan Side note: if I could do that in the browser (with a mock text editor), it would make learning @tailwindcss so much faster.

Like having a sandbox where I could just try attributes out and see (live) how they turn out.

4. Events – attending events, and eventually speaking, has been huge for me.

Learn to give a talk! Start speaking publicly!

(It's not as scary as it seems)

I think there's an opportunity here because Amazon's Kindle marketplace is brutal to use.

Apple has done physical publishing before (with photo books).

Apple's software (iBooks Author) is pretty good and could be modified for physical publishing.

The challenge we ran into: this is really a feature that needs to be built into existing platforms.

These membership tools have focused too much on solopreneurs and solo-creators.

We need to make it easier for folks to partner up, and make something together.

Yes, @jonbuda is a better developer (and could do it quicker).

Yes, I'm supposed to be the "business guy."

Yes, it means Jon has to take time to help me.

BUT...

Just saying: this is what it takes to be a CEO at his level.

It's the real picture.

I actually *dig* it: @garyvee has the life he wants.

I especially like how he included these near the bottom of the page:
- "Who is behind this?" (puts a human face to the project)
- "Why should I trust him?" (it's used by big teams like Shopify)
- "Who else is using it?" (all of these Twitter peeps)

Think about trying to replace Jeff Bezos, Elon Musk, Tim Cook as CEO.

All that history. Tons of lessons learned. Relationships built. Years spent researching and understanding the customer.

It's fun to armchair quarterback, but not practical!

The big message in @joltbook is that when you're doing what everyone else is (especially established players) nobody's going to pay attention.

It's ok to break some norms and try something different!

The trick is to find a “big enough,” emerging market that’s growing.

We don't need new disruptive hardware + software tech.

What we need is new disruptive SOCIAL technologies.

We have very few of these.

Universal basic income is promising, but needs way more testing.

And, we'll need more than just UBI to survive the next 100 years.

Tech companies are moving faster than society can adapt.

The richest 3% own over 50% of the world's wealth.

They also own most of the IP and equity in the tech that's going to disrupt millions of workers.

Most Americans have less than $1,000 in savings.

This is bad.

Months ago I made a video: "How to save your kids from 🤖": https://youtu.be/KVoMoe6MTvo

The advice is hard to give, because it's basically: "become an exceptionally unique superhuman."

The old rules are disappearing faster than we can find new solutions for the whole population.

My friend @chris_hawk puts it this way, and I agree with him:

"Increasingly, there are the 'super winners' who take the lion's share of the attention and revenue; and then there's everyone else."

The middle ground is crumbling.
