It was popularized by a U.S. Marine, Carlson, who learned the term while observing Chinese cooperatives, which used "gōng hé" as their slogan.

When he formed the Raider Battalion in 1942, "gung ho" became their motto.

Eventually the term spread throughout the Marines and then…

@steveparks If you’ve ever had to switch a local meetup group from one bar to another, you’ll know how hard this is.

With our meetup group, we’ve done it 2x in the last 12 years - both times it took a long time to rebuild.

I think the same is true with X —> Bluesky, Mastodon, Threads.

Plus, when friends do reply, I don’t get notified. 🤷‍♂️

@jesseleite85 @chrispian @markjaquith @aarondfrancis No!! That’s a ridiculous take.

“Tend your garden?”

We *should* blame the product, the design decisions, the algorithmic decisions for what is ultimately a worse user experience.

These product/business decisions have been worse for users (and have driven many away).

@r00k @kylecordes I’m intrigued! Was this a clinic on:

a) harnessing your existing ambition to do bigger things
b) cultivating more ambition in your life
c) getting off the ambition train (being less ambitious)

Or something else b

This cult-like fervor can be exciting and fun on its own, for a whole host of people.

Seems unlikely that the USA represents only 10% of global podcast revenues. 🤔

The best "buy once" product businesses have so much demand/distribution that you only need to launch them once. They'll reliably bring in new sales every month/year (similar to a SaaS).

I don't think folks should necessarily start with B2C.

I'm trying to get people in the mindset of being OK with whatever customers you're attracting!

If they're showing up, paying, getting value, and sticking around, it doesn't matter if they're "consumers."

100% this. Applies to almost every email.

“The simple email with less stuff got 13% more opens, a bunch of replies vs zero replies, and the same clickthrough rate (% of openers who clicked a link). It also took 30-50% less time to prepare, and is a lot easier to replicate.”

@robwalling The churn on our $19/month plan is slightly higher than our higher-priced plans, but not by much.

When you look at annual plans, the churn rate for the lowest-priced plan ($190/year) is very close to that of higher-priced plans.
