@abigailotwell I noticed that it’s a very quiet city - hardly any sirens, honking, etc.

And the buildings are so well-insulated you can’t hear street noise.

This is a line from tomorrow's newsletter, where a local company comes to me for advice, and I ask myself:

"What's one simple, high-leverage action they could take today to improve their marketing?"

Learn the "one simple trick" I recommended.

Interesting to see the distribution of MRR here.

Initially, my accountant wanted me to use Quickbooks. Could not stand it. Terrible UX, very oddly organized.

My favorite user experience is WaveApps but none of the accountants I’ve talked to will use it.

@tylertringas Feels like the whole tech labor market has been overcapitalized for decades now.

All of these companies have become dependent on cash injections from investors to pay employees.

I’m wondering about the knock-on effects of all of this (more supply of tech workers… lower…

Critics point out that there's lots of friction in the podcast discovery process.

It takes work to open up your podcast player, search for a show, and subscribe.

But the result of that friction is that the people who go through that process are committed.

When hiring, I'm looking for folks who have demonstrated their abilities.

If I need help with front-end web development, I'm looking for folks whose Twitter presence, GitHub profile, personal website, YouTube channel, etc... that reflects a passion and skill in their discipline.

The key insight is that the boss is hiring to solve a problem they have.

"I need to hire someone better than me at front-end web dev."

"I need to hire someone who's great at marketing, who can improve acquisition."

Be the optimal candidate to solve the boss’ problem.

To rise to the top of the job applicant list you need to be:

“So good at X, they can’t ignore you.”

Where "X" means a recurring need/challenge/desire the boss wants solved.

First, I want to acknowledge how difficult and soul crushing a job search can be. (I know; I’ve been there too!)

It’s a grueling process to constantly apply, hoping for an interview.

The following tips aren’t easy, but could help you rise above the noise.

I see lots of KPI dashboards that list "visits, views, ad impressions, clicks" but haven't seen many folks tracking which marketing activities lead to revenue.

Hoping to publish this YouTube video today; just need help choosing a thumbnail! 🙏

Title of the video: "Starting a podcast: is it worth it?"

Do any of these work? (Reply with the number you like the best)

I'm also open to suggestions!

@asmartbear @climatepaige I especially enjoyed the questions about your first exit and how it didn't ultimately fulfill you.

It seems like the ultimate path to contentment (for entrepreneurs) is to have a business that doesn't cause them too much ongoing suffering!

And yet, so many founders will suffer…

@PierreDeWulf I do appreciate @ConvertKit sharing their numbers as I often use them as a bellwether (“how is the economy affecting their churn / MRR”).

It is helpful!

Maybe we need a private network of unrelated companies (over $1M in ARR) who share revenue. ☺️

- nuanced, require critical thinking
- not sexy/attractive/desirable
- not communicated in a format that can "go viral" (podcasts, long-form articles, books, research papers)

Bad ideas often sound good, are bite-sized, and appeal to the worst parts of our…

The most important factor is your business has to have a good economic engine.

Having a business that is your “passion” isn’t enough: there has to be a baseline of customer demand, steady traffic, and good margins.

Your business’ fundamentals matter!
