@lexrodba @bryce @sacca I'm not so sure about that.

Jason Fried and DHH famously had Bezos buy some of their equity in Basecamp early on. They were able to take millions off the table (personally) and just focus on growing the company (without anxiety, because they had $ in their personal bank accnts).

We can’t talk about increasing the chance for success without addressing this truth:

Anyone can start a business, but that doesn’t mean everyone should.

Some people are starting the wrong businesses. But also, some people are the wrong kind of people to be starting businesses.

When you’re surfing, the wave you choose determines the quality of your ride.

Even the best surfer can’t make a flat swell amazing.

In business, the market you choose will determine the upward potential for revenue and enjoyment.

Should I do it on Clubhouse or @TwitterSpaces?

Assuming you, the founder, get paid the same (let's say $250k), which would you prefer?

- A company with millions in revenue, but requires a team of 20 people.
- A company that requires only yourself.

(Assuming other costs are relatively similar)

If crypto folks are really committed to this experiment, they need to prove it now before too many institutional investors are invested.

We can hit pause until we know efficiency is possible.

As a new founder, you can have all the conditions for success, but ultimately your vision for the product has to resonate with the market.

Your product/brand needs to have attributes that make it attractive to customers in that category (and provide enough reason to switch).

@web Yes! I spoke about this when the pandemic initially hit.

Local delivery networks could even be faster + more efficient.

Especially if autonomous delivery (via robots) could be democratized.

@david_nge I’m still learning and exploring what it means to be a good friend, so I can’t speak with certainty on this yet.

What I can say: life typically slows down for folks 40+.

Your career is mature, your kids are older, there’s less pressure. So it’s a great time to find friends. 👍

Even premium-priced upstarts end up being a "lower cost for better value" play.

In WPengine's case, they were more expensive than Bluehost, but they dramatically reduced the amount of time + money a site owner had to spend on security and updates.

@N0RESP0NSE I'd argue that most new businesses compete on price because they're hungrier than the competition. 😉

You don't want to compete on price forever, but in the beginning, it's often necessary.

But 9/10 the listening experience is subpar.

📊 Unit economics

Think about a musician. 👩‍🎤🎸

## She used to make:

🎵 On iTunes:
Retail price: $0.99 / track
Artist profit: $0.69 / track

## But now she makes:

🟢 On Spotify:
Artist profit: $0.007 / stream

Her profit per unit has gone WAY down.

#2 is about how much time, energy, and money it costs you to get a customer (variable costs).

#3 is mostly about your fixed costs (salaries, office, servers) and, most importantly, your profit.

@jasonfried @tylertringas Again, I think I see this *slightly* different than you.

Yes, a surfer has a “gut instinct” for which wave is going to be good. That instinct has been honed, over years, by being in the water.

You should only trust your instincts if they’ve been honed to recognize good waves.

@grodier @jasonfried I discussed that in my chat with Jason.

My guess is that for most folks, success looks the same: doing significantly better than paid employment.

Most of the bootstrappers I know initially aim for $10k MRR (per founder) in the first 2-3 years, and increase that to $20k later.

@jasonfried You also control which market you target.

It’s (arguably) the most important decision you make.

Some markets are better than others (have more potential buyers, frequently buy products, are easier to reach and serve, have better distribution channels).

@mubashariqbal @adamwathan See, this is where I disagree.

I think the phenomenon Adam’s describing has its foundation in Demand:

People first want a thing, and then seek it out. And, they often discover the solution that has the best Distribution.

Distribution only works if people want what you have.

Quality, by itself, is rarely enough to increase a product's price by 5x.

In the mind of the consumer, "5x better quality" might only be worth "1.5x higher price."

Or, it might not be worth any price increase to them!

@dvassallo Daniel, my question is: when can we call a spade a spade?

How bad does an individual leader have to be before we can label them as such?

Through a series of elections, Hitler’s Nazi party rose to power.

How and when should we label a leader as dangerous?
