🚩 Fourth red flag: YouTube presents significant platform risks for creators.

- Algorithm changes
- Demonetization

🚩 Second red flag:

How much does a creator with 100k subscribers make from YouTube's monetization options?

@JimmyTriesWorld shared his numbers from 2020:

👍 100,000 subscribers
📺 Nearly 10 million views

💰 $47,004.51 from YouTube ads
💸 -$14,710 in costs
😞 $34,000 net rev

Over years, your marketing efforts accumulate, but they also “cross-pollinate” — one audience/channel can amplify another.

For example: if you build a 1,000 subscriber mailing list, it’s easier to launch a YouTube channel, do a Product Hunt launch, etc…

A truth about urban design: most of the truly great cities are old.

Why? It takes many iterations, and hundreds of years of culture, to shape a great town. A town’s “patina” takes a long time to develop.

It’s why I’m still hopeful for Canada’s towns: they’re all very young. https://twitter.com/SCP_Hughes/status/1442188670392541184

@joelgascoigne @ThisIsSethsBlog I’m glad there are smart people still openly questioning the utility + societal value of NFTs.

I’m not opposed to NFTs having a future in society, but there are still many unanswered questions as to whether they’re truly a “good thing” for the planet, for artists, and for owners

Also: I'm not necessarily in favor of Denmark removing their restrictions.

My point:

- There's a lot of opposition in the US/Canada to corona passes / vaccine passports.
- Denmark has shown that these kinds of passports can help a country make progress.

This is why I use @getRewardful for tracking campaigns: it was built for attributing SaaS revenue in Stripe to specific affiliates.

But instead of using it just for just affiliates, I also use it to track all my marketing campaigns.

Using a no-code tool like @meepsapp you can get people to pay for early access to your SaaS, fill out a profile, invite them to Slack or Discord, and send them email updates.

(I think it's the best way to launch a startup)

I made a video as well: https://youtu.be/LixMlydi7dY

If the pressure of "finding a good market" feels overwhelming, focus on what you can control:

- learn to recognize the size & shape of good business opportunities
- get out of your bubble and explore different industries (contractor or employee)
- make connections
- build skills

@TonsOfLaziness @levelsio I think you're missing my point.

Nobody can really give you that list.

It has to come from your experience, your insights, your understanding of that market.

The only way to find a good market, that's a good fit for you personally, is to explore.

Working in an industry that doesn't seem to be going anywhere? Move on as quickly as you can.

I worked in the non-profit sector for years. I was unhappy, but was scared to make a move!

When I finally made the jump to tech, tons of opportunities opened up.

Fight that inertia 💪

@microacquire ☝️ this is from a chat with my SaaS friends.

We observed the stages where we got the most interest from investors/acquirers.

What's curious: there's lots of interest for bootstrapped SaaS making $0-$50k MRR, but less after that.

Just harder to buy/sell once you're $50k MRR+.

@mattwensing Creators are going back to old, open, simple protocols: email, web, RSS in droves. (The resurgence of blogs and email newsletters is a good example)

Simple is better for creators: it means they own the connection with their audience.

@RikNieu Usually more nuanced than that.

Sole-proprietors generally don’t have paystubs.

If you have a Corp, you want to keep as much money in the company (which usually means a smaller salary on paper). Also: dividends are often not counted as income by banks.

@kvlly Makes sense.

In my experience, “charge more” is often the right answer for services/contract work.

But for products it’s more nuanced. Most categories already have an anchor price, and charging too much more drives away customers.

Up until now distribution and discovery have always needed to be centralized (Google search, YouTube,).

Is there a way to achieve this in a decentralized way? 🤔

For example, is a decentralized, open, search engine truly possible?

But too often, all that diversity is hidden behind an 140px avatar. We don't truly *see* each other.
