Living in BC, I know what it’s like to have the threat of forest fires.

Even when the fires are far away, the sky still gets choked with smoke that burns your eyes and is hard to breathe.

“Living with the smoke” has become a yearly reality here now, nearly every summer.

@misener First I ask: "Do you listen to podcasts?"

If they say Yes: "Cool. Every podcast you listen to needs to be hosted somewhere (just like a website needs hosting). That's what my company does."

If they say No: "Would you like another glass of wine?"

Iterating in small, experimental phases helps.

"Let's launch something small and see what the response is."

Don't launch a chain of taco restaurants until you know what it's like running a small taco stand.

@PaulHawken Pragmatically, true human sustainability on the planet isn't realistic.

"We have to accept that fact and not delude ourselves into thinking something is sustainable. Then you can try to achieve a situation where you’re causing the least amount of harm possible." – Yvon Chouinard

On a micro-scale: "How much MRR is enough?" is a silly question, because, in our current global economic model, your business has to keep growing (or it will eventually die).

I don't think I ever lashed out at anybody publicly, but I can remember meeting smart, purposeful, twenty-somethings and being off-put by their wholeheartedness.

Their "joie de vivre" was enough to provoke negative thoughts inside of me.

Fast forward many years.

In 2017, I was depressed. I was grappling with some hard stuff in my personal life.

At the same time, I'd allowed feelings of cynicism grow inside of me.

This resulted in me being resentful towards anyone who seemed happy and earnest.

On the flip side, I’ve had products where overall interest was low, but there was a small core of dedicated users.

Here too the product fizzled, because there wasn’t enough demand to sustain the product.

Some users loved it and used it, but there weren’t enough of them.

In business, nothing is guaranteed.

You might be in a good market today, but tomorrow it could fall apart.

Markets are fickle.

Some days they want 🍦, other days they want 🥤.

The economy can go up, or it can crash.

A good competitor can come in and grab market share.

@derrickreimer "Hey, I have this idea for a new startup."

☝️ I'm talking about the ideas that just "came to mind," but aren't grounded in market demand.

Often they take the form of:
- "Technically, this can be improved!"
- "Look at how inefficient this is."
- "I could design this better."

First, there are some products, like Slack, that generally make people weary.

Many would likely be “relieved” if they could no longer use Slack.

BUT, regardless, they will continue to use Slack because it’s entrenched in their company culture and processes.

@sunnysinghio @fajarsiddiqFS @matteing @ASpittel @kvlly @hnshah There are no easy answers here, and it depends a lot on your situation.

It’s a lot easier to get to “minimum viable income” if your personal expenses are low.

I flailed a lot before and after quitting my job: it came from the pressure of having to provide for my family.

@earthlingworks @coreyhainesco 👌 Yes: it’s not “build it and they will come.”

And there’s definitely some research and positioning that happens before you launch.

But 80% of our learning with Transistor has been from the folks who showed up after we launched and paid us.

As a group, they’re pretty diverse!

@mubashariqbal The market is the same though (“travelers who want accommodation”).

Airbnb didn’t invent the market, they just changed the way the job was done.

I didn’t start traveling because of Airbnb, I just changed where I stay.

I'm nodding my head in agreement with @nwquah here.

My take is premium podcasts will work for Spotify because they have:

- a bundled offering (music + free podcasts + premium podcasts)
- 96 million subscribers already paying

But it won't work for Luminary, Brew, etc...

@joshuap I personally like "Marketing Engineer" as a role.

In 2019, I wouldn't be trying to hire a "Growth Hacker" 🤦‍♂️, I'd be trying to hire someone like @adamwathan.

Anyone here know of good Ruby gems for "obscenity filtering"?

Use case: In @TransistorFM, we'd like to warn users when they have explicit words in their show notes, so Apple doesn't reject their RSS feed.

I see some really old ones on GitHub (~6 years old) but nothing new.
