In Canada, and the EU, sending this kind of cold email outreach is illegal (CASL here in Canada).

@earthlingworks @arvidkahl Yeah. I will say that the "success stories" that were helpful to me were the ones where I was DMing with friends who had succeeded, and I was really able to get a full picture of the dynamics at play.

(Also, there are a few honest indie podcasts that share honest stories)

Studying failure in business isn't that helpful. All sorts of folks start all sorts of businesses; examining an unlimited number of failure modes isn't that instructive.

Success stories are more helpful than people give them credit for.

Waze was built on pre-existing demand for GPS.

Lots of folks wanted a GPS but couldn’t afford it, or found it too cumbersome.

Waze just unlocked pre-existing, pent up demand.

This is why understanding history is so important: you can see entrepreneurs and inventors building on pre-existing momentum.

There's a clear line between the early diaries of the 1700s, daily planners, PDAs (like the Newton, Palm), and devices like the Blackberry and iPhone.

This is what iterating on top of existing momentum looks like:

Instagram in 2010: "Oh, you're already sharing photos on Twitter? What if you could do that, but with cool filters?"

They tapped into an existing behavior and an unmet desire: "Make my photos look better/cooler."

The key is to build an iteration that matches the direction and velocity of the existing momentum.

You can't pull potential customers too far off their existing behavior, expectations, or desires. (It's too big of an ask)

An initial (and popular) use case for Instagram was sharing photos on Twitter.

Instagram URLs posted on Twitter would automatically embed the image in the tweet. (Later deprecated)

Most successful software products are built on top of existing momentum.

For example, Instagram's founders recognized the existing wave ("whoa, folks like sharing photos on Twitpic, and they like applying filters with Hipstamatic").
