Why do older founders have an advantage?

According to @seths_d's book, it's because of their employment experience!

"Entrepreneurs are roughly twice as likely to build an extremely successful company if they previously worked in the field in which they started the company."

"Researchers found that the average age of a business founder in the United States is 41.9 years old. They discovered that older founders consistently had higher probabilities of success, at least until the age of sixty."

My business partner and I didn’t start @TransistorFM (a podcast hosting startup) until we were in our late 30s.

Today, Transistor has made millions of dollars in revenue, and we’re both in our 40s.

The narrative that you have to be young to start a successful startup is wrong.

@TransistorFM http://Transistor.fm is an indie, bootstrapped, startup.

While we're not immune from all effects of a recession, being indie gives us significant advantages:

- We have no VCs to appease
- We have low overhead
- We're profitable

This means we can stay focused on customers 💯

Over the years, I've learned so much about mental health from Dr. @sherrywalling.

Her new book is coming out on July 26.

It's a vital "guide for finding hope in the landscape of loss."

I've already pre-ordered it! (And you should too)

@Patticus Here’s what I’ve seen:

- Assistants who book meetings for execs love apps like @savvycal (makes their job way easier). The execs themselves don’t care.
- Indie hackers / small shops also love tools like this.
- The only people I’ve seen get “offended” are tech workers in SF.

It’s incredibly difficult to convince people to want something (especially at scale).

This is why startups need to tap into a pre-existing desire.

We can’t create the hunger, but we can feed hungry customers.

@pavel_ivanovsky @TransistorFM It’s an observation based on 20+ years of selling to all sorts of businesses.

The boss makes decisions based on what he/she wants.

It’s based on what they desire: the change they wish to see, the progress they wish to make, etc.

Someone might say "I need to lose weight," but their real desire is to look (and feel) good.

Workers might use PowerPoint because they "need" slides, but what they really want is the fun of getting to be creative at work.

I’m not convinced he’ll do a better job. (And I think his rhetoric is toxic and misleading)

But on a day to day basis, “Elon buying Twitter” doesn’t make me actively unhappy. 😄

Second, up until now, TSLA's stock price hasn't been grounded in fundamentals. I think this will change.

@GregMolnar @IndieHackers @shl @elonmusk From a CEO-perspective it actually matters a lot: because all of your shareholders and employees are depending on those partnerships.

And this wasn’t him “speaking truth to power”; he was just acting irresponsibly.

Leaders need to take responsibility for what they do and say.

@yongfook It’s one of the major benefits of running a small, self-funded, SaaS.

When you’re not pushing unrealistic growth, your cash flow is much simpler.

We also don’t have inventory, or offer payment terms to customers, which is usually what makes managing cash flow more complicated.

@petecodes @shl @IndieHackers I bought our car in 2020. That year there wasn’t a lot of choice: Chevy Bolt, Nissan Lead, or Model 3.

Since we’ve bought it, Elon has acted more erratically, has been distracted, and hasn’t taken Tesla Autopilot crashes seriously.

These days, there’s lots more choice in EVs.

(I don’t live in the US either)

This is more a question about Elon’s influence, actions, and his failure to take responsibility.

There’s no need to admire someone who conducts himself the way Elon does. (There are better models)

It’s not just celebrities: many of us Indie Hackers and startup founders, have influence.

We get new customers from Twitter, our blog, our podcast, etc. This is a form of influence that we need to take responsibility for.

We need to be conscientious in what we say and do.

The solution is:

- we need to hold them to a higher standard
- they need to hold themselves to a higher standard

Also, anyone who runs a car company who doesn’t take safety seriously should resign.
