@SSandds @noahwbragg But isn’t that volatility exacerbated with crypto?

In web3, we’ve seen how a single tweet can dramatically change the price/demand for a specific coin.

Also, in this latest financial crisis, we’ve seen that crypto is incredibly volatile.

@noahwbragg But is crypto's code for "sending money" substantially better than, for example, TransferWise's code?

TransferWise is also way more efficient than its competitors (Wester Union, etc).

When most people use fiat currency, "sending crypto fast" doesn't seem like an advantage.

@Levin_of_Indigo You can’t send *anyone* crypto though, can you? They need a crypto wallet.

Given gas fees, volatility, and the time it takes to complete a transfer, is it better than alternatives like e-transfers, wires?

If you want to invest in stocks, don’t you still need an intermediary?

The tricky thing, for any indie creator, is that ultimately you’re beholden to market forces, and markets aren’t always kind. There’s winners and losers.

Typically, getting to a win is going to require some losses. Unfortunately, not everyone can sustain themselves long enough.

Owning an indie startup, or being an indie creator, can be incredibly rewarding.

In the right context, it can provide a better life: more margin, more freedom.

But getting there isn’t a sure bet. There are things you can do to increase your chances, but nothing is guaranteed.

As someone who successfully “built something in public,” I feel two opposing pulls:

For me, hearing the stories of other successful founders inspired me. I want to pass that on.

But I also want to be careful not to sell people on a path that might not work out for them.

@philipyoungg As soon as I was out of “desperation mode” I found “not sweating the small stuff” helpful (even when I wasn’t making as much money).

What’s interesting is the scarcity mindset can continue even once you have more money.

Naturally, this doesn't apply to folks who are in desperation mode.

(If you're in the desert, and you tip over your water bottle, that's more serious)

But many of us are operating on an old script about money that isn't serving us anymore.

If I accidentally tip over my water bottle the water isn't "wasted," it goes into the soil.

Why worry about the water I no longer have? (Better to enjoy the water still in my bottle).

The same is true with money.

For me, letting go of my obsession with "not wasting money" has helped me to be more generous.

I don't hold on to it so tightly; I'm more willing to let it go and do the good it needs to do in the world.

Some people still have a scarcity mindset, even after they're earning a good income.

$20 will fall out of their pocket, and it will ruin their day.

It's better to not hold on too tightly, to be OK with letting it go.

Otherwise, worrying about money will rule your life.

Many of us grew up in scarcity, where there wasn't a lot of $.

We were told that buying certain things was a "waste."
We were taught to be fearful of losing money.

But if you have zero threshold for "wasted" money, you give yourself (and your family) a lot of unneeded stress.

It's OK to waste a little money.

In the past, I would stress over every purchase.

But now, I've learned to be OK with wasting a little money:

Kids want money for the arcade? Give them some.
Water costs $5 at that concert? Just buy it.
$100 item you can't return? No worries.

The charging experience is really good. The built-in software automatically finds Superchargers for you, let’s you know how busy they are, and tells you how long to charge before continuing your trip.

Also, they’re fast!

In my "indie creator" phase (2016 + 2017), the @megamaker community + @marketingdevs was most of my income. (Despite having tried to make 100+ things in a year)

I've seen too many makers who keep creating (and maintaining!) multiple things at once:

podcasts
live events
communities
live webinars
info products
online courses
email newsletters
YouTube channels

It's too much!

Focus on 1-2 things that can give you the $ you need.

This means creators & entrepreneurs need to be clear about what they want from their indie businesses.

Make sure the *thing you're doing* can actually provide the *$ you want*.

Example: if you need $100k/year, be realistic about how attainable that is for your category.

The biggest temptation for individual creators (and small business owners) is continually adding more to their plate in the pursuit of earning their desired $/year.

Much better to find 1-2 "main things" that can drive the kind of revenue you want/need.
