@ianlandsman I see the upside of AI (I’m using it too!)

But it’s potential to destroy millions of jobs can’t be underestimated.

It’s only empowering until it takes way your economic earning potential.

This will effect white-collar (lawyers, accountants, programmers), and blue collar…

@ianlandsman CHIPS Act could be a good job creator for high-skilled workers.

But the overall trend is clear: since the 1980s tech disruption is a net destroyer of jobs.

Governments will need many more initiatives like this one, and it’s going to need to be funded by… (taxes?)

@ianlandsman Yes: we can legislate what happens when automation takes away good jobs from workers.

The benefits from automation, AI, etc shouldn’t just go to the people at the top.

The upside needs to be distributed.

Even the folks at Goldman Sachs (!!?) are concerned about AI replacing jobs:

“Technological change… has displaced workers at a faster pace than it has created new opportunities since the 1980s.”

This isn’t just about trucks. The doc covers jobs that *could* be disrupted (trucks, still far away) and jobs that have already been disrupted.

@ianlandsman you and I have wrestled over the issue of automation, AI, and the possible disruption (replacement) of millions of jobs.

I’m watching this doc right now (from 3 years ago).

Feels like this could be a big problem.

When Twitter was really good, it was a place that facilitated connections.

Often, the key moments in life occur because of “who you know” and “who knows you.”

This still happens for me on Twitter, but not nearly as much.

@dr On the flip side, Twitter has (historically) been great at building connections with people, which can be enormously helpful.

Often, it’s “who you know” and “who knows you” and Twitter has been good at facilitating both.

Impressions > Clicks > Leads > Conversion

(Not that I use Twitter only as a marketing channel, but from a funnel perspective it’s a lot of work for very few leads)

In terms of values, it espouses a lot of the same beliefs about open source and federation that WordPress has.

Also, with WP now supporting ActivityPub seems like a no-brainer to be on the platform with the biggest user base?

@shavin47 @TransistorFM I’ve thought a lot about building community. 👍

I’ve been running the @megamaker community since 2013.

I’ve tried (multiple times) to build community platforms (@meepsapp most recently).

The challenge is that most folks just end up using Slack, Discord, Twitter, FB groups.

1. Hire people we know from our online and real-life communities.
2. Hire folks first as part-time contractors.
3. We hire to make our lives better! Folks we enjoy working with, who produce cool ideas, solid work, etc
4. We hire slowly

Last night, Lorinda started repainting my office background for video.

@theKevinShen suggests that folks with a skin tone like mine choose a dark “cool” tone for the back wall.

We’re painting it a matte black to create a contrast between me (the subject) and the background.

The goal is to upgrade everything to give me a consistent look (and stop using my window as my main light source).

One of the best parts of @theKevinShen's course is it gives you equipment recommendations.

We're going to try everything they recommended (camera, lenses, lights).

Yesterday, Lorinda cleared out my office & started positioning my desk and existing camera according to the principles in @theKevinShen's course

I was surprised at how much better the shots looked, even without adding anything new!

(The only light source here is an open window)

Lorinda was keen to learn how to do studio design, so I asked her if she could help me build a better video setup. She said yes!

She signed up for @theKevinShen's "Dream Studio" course, and she's been loving it. Kevin and his team are really good at this stuff.

@ianlandsman I think it won’t affect you (or me) because we’re owners of small companies. We’ll likely be fine.

But it’s folks who work for massive corporations who should be concerned.

The way it’s structured currently, most of the upside from AI will accrue to venture capitalists, big corporations, and the wealthy.

AI is a cost cutting, labor saving technology that benefits owners, not regular employees.

Ultimately, the benefits won’t “trickle down.”

If “AI replacing jobs” is a trend, folks who “embrace AI” to get new jobs will have to compete with millions of other folks who lost their jobs.

It’s also likely that these new “AI-assisted” jobs will pay less.

This is why we need public policy. https://twitter.com/gregisenberg/status/1648677168379994115

Another way to think about customer demand:

Imagine people all over the world waking up.

How many of them are planning to buy your type of product today?

How many of them are in motion searching for a solution?

Founders/teams, think about:

- what product/customer insights do you have that others don’t?
- how well can you execute compared to your competition?
- what connections, resources, and skills do you have that give you a leg up?
- can you build a brand that stands out?

Broadly, these are the five most important variables in business:

- how much demand is there from customers for your type of product?
- how many of these potential customers are there?
- how much are they willing to pay?
- how much competition is there?
- what are your costs?

Because features and UIs change so frequently, I tried not to overthink these:

- Record in one take
- Edit
- Publish to YouTube

Not perfect, but I want to be in the habit of redoing them more often.
